Hi there, I've just bought a 1993 Disco TDi and the 12V socket isn't working. I've checked on various forums and it would appear the socket is on the same fuse as the radio. The radio works...

I've replaced the socket with a new one from Halfords (exact match, who'd have thought) and still no joy. Is there anything easy I can do or am I stuffed?

I've been trying to replace the aerial too as it is broken but the nut turns and doesn't come off... any ideas before I get the hacksaw out?

Finally it doesn't have any central locking. I thought that was just its age but then I checked the fuses and found a fuse for central locking. I went to replace it and found it fine but when it is pulled in and out the doors lock and unlock. Now before I replace the fuse with a switch so I can unlock all the doors after opening mine any idea? I've tried getting it just in and seeing if the lock works then but no joy.

Worryingly there is a bunch of wires in the door pocket...

We picked up this disco, our first, off eBay and typically were screwed on the description. Nice car, runs fine but I think there is a head gasket problem as the engine is all oily and it drips plenty. The gear box has a real clunk to it after a change... normal?

Oh and any idea how to get rid of cigarette and dog smells? I've Febreezed the hell out of it, brushed out the hairs, hoovered, used special dog faux-Febreeze, got smelly air fresheners in there etc but still stinky. Mind you running 50% veg oil is also masking it with the wonderful burn chip smell.

Sorry if I've made a faux pas by having my first post just being a plea for help. Hi!

 holy crap, hope you didn't pay more than a fiver for it.

I'll just say hello for the moment and then try and answer some questions in a bit.

Thank you all so far.

I do appreciate the points over the age and eBay but I am but a poor teacher and without going to a loan shark I can't afford more than £1100 at a time for a car and with my credit history (bust business from years ago, well past age they should have been written off but what the law says and what happens in reality are different things) I will never be able to afford more so I have to make do.

The bicarb. Do you mean scrub it down with damp bicarb then...? Hoover it off?

Chippenham, Wiltshire.

I will be hopefully getting waste oil from a friend at some point soon but for the mo its supermarket stuff which means a saving of at least £25 on a tank of fuel, sometimes more.
