Hello All,

My disco 2 - 2003 TD5 now crunches into 1st and 3rd.

Ive changed the oil twice with no improvement.

After seeing the price of a fitted recon I thought about maybe fitting a low mileage second hand gearbox. mine has done 150,000.

Does any one have any advice on how to change the gearbox? I dropped the box out of my 300tdi and replaced the clutch fork and clutch so I have some experience.

Any help is appreciated.

Get a recon box from Ashcroft and do it yourself.

Buying used means you've saved a few pounds but have no idea of the internal condition.

Take the transfer box off first, that makes it more evenly weighted.

Getting it lined up can be a faff, but a bit of care and a support on a trolley jack will do it.

What oil are you using?

Peter

Hi Mike, if you look at the VAT included price of an Ashcrofts reconditioned unit £600 and the price of an average 2nd hand box on Ebay at perhaps £250, the difference is still quite large and going second hand you would normally keep your own box unlike the Ashcroft solution.

You could then have someone local do some work on your own 'box to have as a back-up IF you ever have troubles with the purchased one.

The problem is, you have got to find someone who will work on the R380 box and do a decent job.

We had a spare box but it was noisy, so we asked a few indies in the region, nobody wanted to do it, even with us supplying the parts, so we exchanged the box with a recon one from Ashcrofts.

theres bound to be a few around ,r380 is a very simple box to rebuild
