LT77-ATF or gear oil?

Thanks for those 'cheerful' answers. I suppose you already know that land rover only specified ATF for the lt77 because gear oil gets too thick for the internal gear pump to move around in cold conditions. I happen to live in Africa where the average temperature, even at night is about 25 degrees C. In such weather, most grades of oil remain highly fluid. Maybe I might just consider the grease. Afterall, what do I know? I'm just a petroleum engineer.

wasnt the only reason atf transfer heat more efficently, the reason why lt85 and 95 run engine oil as v8s where expected to travel faster further than series vehicles ,and baulk rings are designed for use with it ,baulk ring has to remove oil to brake on gear cone to align dog teeth for smooth gear change ,they cant do it with gear oil ,you end up with gold coloured oil quickly

may I suggest that yui change yo Usercp to show that yu are in Africa - it might, just might, make a difference to the answers yu get.
I would suggest that as you a "just a petroleum engineer", you dont know the answer, otherwise why ask the question?

As you have now supplied more information, I would suggest you use (if yu can get it) Castrol Transmax Dex III Multivehicle oil - as it has "Exceptional High temperature protection to effectively resist fluid oxidisation and formation of harmful deposits".
