I have a 98 reg 50th anniversary edition Land Rover Discovery that has been trouble free since I have had it. However, the other day it started to lose power going up hills and also cut out a couple of times. We called the RAC who said it was probably the EGR but that it wasn't a big thing and was safe to use. Unfortunately the car completely lost power whilst driving the next day yet when I tried to start it, it struggled into life and then when I took the key out the engine continued to run.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be.

Thank you in advance.

Sounds like fuel stop solenoid of the back of the fuel pump is playing up.
Disconnect the small spade connector and take car for a spin see if it makes any difference, you will need to stall it to stop the engine

Now - I mite be wrong here, but - if the lead is removed, it shouldn't start at all. It could be a loose connnector. Make sure it's a good tight fit, so yu get a good contact.

The solenoid is power on to open-power off to shut as mad hat says-yours is jamming open on power off(knackered spring or seal)-so needs changing-also change the fuel filter,if this hasn't been done for a while
