Hi guys

got thinking the other day would it be possible to fit a 200 /300 tdi engine into say a d2 td5 and remove all the troublesome electrics and fit / make a basic engine loom, are the gearboxes the same, is it possible as i see it on a td5 its the engine that gives most of the probs, just thinking as d2s are becoming cheeper and cheeper and there are still loads of d1 tdis knocking about.

anything is possible but i think the wiring will be more of an issue than you realise unless you fit disco 1 complete loom ,instruments ,switches ,alarm system etc

The thing is Graham that if you look at the big picture of the problems with D2, they are not predominently engine related. Auto gearboxes, suspension etc etc would all still be there.

I've had 3 TD5's now: one of them had a head gasket problem (so not electronic), current one has a Torque Converter problem, and the third had no probs at all.

None of these would have been solved by a TDi implant.
 
and by the time you went in to all that trouble converting, you would basically end up with a slightly more refined d1
 
I,ve not had a engine related problem in my TD5.

One of the lads that farms the land where I live has put the engine out of his rotten 200 into a blown V8 D2. He drives it every day, so it can be done. He didnt give me the impression it was a big deal at all.

yeah things mite be less complicated with a v8 to convert to tdi as the td5 possibly has more electrickery than a v8 does, i wouldn't mind getting hold of a d2 td5 to convert to tdi as a long term project at some point though mmm i will have a think about it, was just a thought and wanted to run it past peeps to see what you thought.

From the fairly limited amount of work I've done on my 300 Tdi, the only electrical engine controls it looks like you need to get it running would be a) the starter motor connection b) the solenoid on the back of the diesel injection pump.

Everything else seems to mechanical as far as I can tell...I suppose there is also the EGR valve but how many engines still have those connected.

The problem is not whether it's possible to install a mechanical pump TDi 300 engine or not.

The likely area of frustration is whether it is possible for the other systems BC, SLABS etc etc without an engine ECU to talk to.
 
When I browse parts catalogues and other vehicle listings, Discovery 2 TDI always comes up as an option, although I always thought the only diesel engine the Disco2 used was the TD5. Anyone else see these things?

HI there, there has never been a Discovery 2 (1998 to 2004) with a TDi engine coming from the factory. As far as I know.

Discovery 2 had to comply with the later pollution regs that the TDi would not, in it's then current form, be able to meet, which is why for diesel engines the TD5 was produced as it is a cleaner-burning engine.
 
Think if I was going down the route of a different engine I would go for a bigger more powerfull lump say a mazda 3.5 or a big gmc lump.
 
I'm just about to start my d2 tdi project now. Getting it running I don't think is the problem it's tricking the ecu's into thinking there's a v8 up there. The speed sensor for the slabs ecu can come off transfer box and the alternator will supply the feed for the tacho( in theory) . I'll let you all know how it goes in the coming weeks
 
I say just buy an old D1 there cheap as chips these days and fix any welding problems it may need and you have your self a brilliant car plus they are much easier to work on than a D2 would be.
