Just a quick one, i went and got a quote for an overhaul on my injectors (i.e full clean and reset) and i have been quoted, about £200+VAT for an overhaul of the set, depending on if any parts are required (Nozzles).

Plus, I have to take the injectors out, and give it to them to do?

Is that right? Now i know i'm a tight bastard, but i'd have thought, at that price, they'd take them out my car for me and do them?

Surely for that quote, i could just buy a whole new set on fleabay, and fit them myself?

Appreciate your input as usual :)

Chris.

Hi Chris a bill of £240 inc vat sounds like a chunk to me as well. Just a quick question if you don't mind? What leads you to believe that the injectors need looking at?

Is yours a manual box non EDC car? If yes you need the sttd injector:

ERR3339 | Fuel injector - new - manufactured by Bosch - 300TDI

Nozzles only:

Hey, I'm still trying to solve my smokey problem, so going through everything slowly, but what led me to believe it may be the injectors, is the stench of rich diesel. Not so bad if all the windows are closed, but when open it honks!

I've no idea what non EDC is, but it is a manual :) 300tdi '94 :)

Would the idea be to buy nozzles and injectors together and just fit them?

Thanks :)

I can't remember if I've been involved in your previous smokey engine problem, but a strong diesel smell could be caused by fuel leaks; inadequate air supply to the engine etc etc.

However, if you've decided it's the injectors, then that's where we'll focus.

When you buy a new injector it comes complete with it's nozzle, so all you need are the new copper washers to go with it and you're done.

As an alternative, if the existing injector nozzles look in poor shape you can replace them with new ones at a much lower cost. I've seen peeps selling nozzles on their own for as a little as £15 a piece. Just do a bit of searching.

So, bottom line to your original question, do you want to spend £240 for someone else to clean and adjust your existing injectors (once you have removed them!!), with the possibility of greater cost if they find they need to change the nozzles as well?

Or, do you want to buy a new set of Bosch injectors for less than £200, take out your old ones, install the new ones and you're good to go?

Personally I would go new injectors, but that's just me.

New injectors definitely sounds better, Thank you :)

And in regards to smokey problem, you may have been involved lol, I'm just trying to eliminate all possible problems, as before I explained it was blue smoke, but No oil loss, so I've been looking at other possibilities now :)

But as you've mentioned fuel leaks, I will delve a little. Where would I check? As there are no obvious leaks under mine? Not like before when my return pipe split?

Hi Chris, it was the leak-off pipes I was thinking of primarily, but you could also check the lift pump and it's connections, the fuel filter holder, the plastic tap on the bottom of the fuel filter.

So, re the colour of the smoke - as you know blue smoke indicates burnt oil and that can come from a variety of sources but a common one would be the valve guides being worn.

Black smoke indicates unburnt fuel which can be caused by turbo hose internal delamination, blocked or collapsed air filter etc etc.

Depending on how far along this road you've gone, I would be inclined to check other stuff before the injectors. IF your injectors are bad, they wouldn't, on their own, cause blue smoke????????

Checked lift pump, No visible leaks or from filter, I had a compression test done at a local garage a few months ago, and they said all is as it should be too.

How do I check valve guides? Easy thing to do?

To test for valve guide wear do the following:

Get the engine well warmed up, then:

Go for a drive, leaving the car in 3rd or 4th, not fifth. Have someone with you or following you;

If you have valve guide wear it will show itself as a puff of blue smoke if you release the throttle and then go back on. It'll last for a couple of seconds not much more.

I have valve guide wear..... Sheet!

I already know that happens lol, Ok, is it an at home fix, or take to a mechanic kind of job? Also, do you know what sort of costs I'm looking at?

On a TDi I would say it's deffo home fix territory. Can't remember if you have to take the head off or not to do. I have a feeling it is head off, so you can mess about with the valves.

Sorry for the vagueness, it's not a job I've done myself.
