What's is the maximum volume level for a car horn and where is it documented officially online? :D

I've been googling it for ages, and there are all sorts of answers from many people, but I can't find anything definitive!
 
ok, cool.

presumably, anything above 120dB would be legal if it were only used on private land, right? I know that sounds pointless, but I imagine it's how the law works...

Also, how many dB is a standard 1997 Disco horn??
 
No max. It has to be audible and only one tone (so that rules out the dukes of hazzard!!!) but the test has no max volume.

Max noise will be covered under other laws, so if you blast a 200dB horn in the middle of chavtown at 2 in the morning, you might get done for nuisance!

Vosa say so long as it's audible, is neither a gong, siren or bell and is monotone, anything goes. The test is down to the discretion of the tester.

there is no max laws to horns for deffo as i do have a set of air horns of a heavy goods train..... 2.5ft 3ft bolted under the rear tub............ ****ing loud........ although its good to keep the standard horn still working...
 
So here's the thing... i wil always keep the standard horn working. I was considering adding a second, louder horn for occasional use.

Train horns were what I was looking for actually! :D

Thing is, ideally they'll be hidden away under the bonnet. Could put them on the roof, but would make my car look even more tempting to a thief!

The main thing is, though, will i need a compressed air tank and a compressor for a train horn or can you buy 12V electric ones? I want something as simple as possible, you see...

You can have duel tripple or quad tone its not illegal and will not fail an mot test but it is musical that are illegal its local bylaws that have the say on how loud
 
on the air front i brought an air tank of a lorry about 1 foot like 1 foot wide holds 7 liters of air 200 psi i put a t conector on with a tap one side a quick release for an air line so u open the tap and fill your air as high as your compressor will allow around 150 psi turn the tap of of disconcect your air line turn back back on (air lines quick release seal them selfs) the other side of the t going to the air horns and the 12v switch

if any of that makes sence that make it cheap to set up and i get a good 1 min of horn time on one tank...

i can take pics if u are thinking of doing it like this

Thanks for the info!

However, you mention where you got the air tank from etc... but I don't have a compressor, I don't have the air horns, and I don't have anything else yet either... now would I know where or how to mount it! :confused::confused:

It's starting to sound rather complicated and rather expensive for relatively little gain in life, if you know what i mean!
