I have recently replaced the clutch in my 200TDI and on a long journey I felt vibrations at certain speeds.

After searching the forum I checked the UJ's and Props. All were good but there is play, (vertical) at the front prop as it exits the transfer box.

Question;
  1. Should there be play? I am talking a couple of millimeters. I suspect there shouldn't
  2. Is there a bearing located here?
  3. Is it easily replaced without removing the transfer box?
  4. To remove transfer box do I need to take the sodding gearbox out again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is no oil leaking so I will check the oil level when I have a spare minute or two as it could quite possibly be empty - I have only just brought it and not had time to do a complete service from bumper to bumper.

Tx

remove each prop in turn and drive in diff lock on other see if it makes difference, there is some play in front shaft as is short and only supported by ball brg which will allow some rocking movement leaking is a good sign of poor brg

Thanks guys,

As there shouldn't be any bearing play - yet there is - I will be replacing the bearing.

The lovely Haynes manual has nothing on this so does anyone have some pointers. I have searched but not found a lot - or have missed it completely.

Thanks

i said there will some rock in front shaft as for it been the result of it been ball brg or play through wear,but to remove remove prop undo 30mm socket size nut remove flange ,seal ,circlip ,replace nut and washer and you should be able to lever shaft and brg out they arent usualy in tight using 2 levers make sur its in difflock as this keeps diff lock selector dog in alignment, when refitting fill reverse side of seal with vaseline or grease to hold garter spring in place

Thank James,

I will play with the props this weekend and move on from there. In terms of gearbox type, how will I find out if its Lt77? or R380?

Cheers
