Afternoon all,

Trying to locate the source of a good old fashioned clunk when pulling away at the moment. Have been having a right royal wiggle of all the joints, bushes etc with the breaker bar. Nothing seems to move all that much but the bushes on the axle end of the radius arms are either invisible or are not there.

Should I be able to see any rubber or anything or should I be able to look up the 3mm (ish) gap between the radius arm and the mount and see the bolt running through?

Both Sides are the same on both radius arms so maybe its how it should be but not sure. If someone has a picture of theres if its still got rubber ones in and not polys can I please look at your bush. :)

Cheers.

If you are getting a single 'knock' when you pull away or when you go into reverse, it might be caused by a worn 'A' frame ball-joint.This is the piece that locks the axle in place and prevents sideways movement.

The new part is cheap to buy but the job can be quite difficult. It involves first of all jacking up the rear chassis to allow access to the base of the ball-joint. Then remove the castellated nut to allow removal from the axle casing. After that remove the two bolts holding the ball-joint carrier and remove the assembly to a bench to remove the old ball-joint and insert (ooh Matron) the new one, then re-install.

Yeah I had a good look at that and the how to guide from buster. I originally thought it could be that. However it doesnt budge when i've got some one jumping up and down on the back end and it only seems to do it in 1st although mainly i've noticed it clunks after i've either pulled up from a high speed (its a 300 you see so it does do high speeds) or from a hill start as if something is twisting when i stop and then releasing as I pull away.

I've got a feeling its gonna be wanna those things that i'll have to replace everything on the vehicle and then find out it was something rolling around in the ash tray.

It is quite common to have a clunk on discovery 1s when changing gear sharpish. Iv had 3 that do this, I just changed more smoothly and the noise went. Just treat it like a woman, nice and smooth & she will do what you want. Saying that if it's doing it when you stop it could be anti roll bar bushes.
