huge problem td5 disco oil overfill engine knock, what happened was i got the car a few days ago on a trade sale from a main dealer.im in the motor trade.
the car was delivered by a trade plate driver, went fine.then today i was going up hill,it started knocking very loud, pulled over straight away, white smoke, engine revved mad, switched off,and its knocked quite loud and switched off
checked the dipstick and its 4 inches over the max!
someone has sabotaged the car
please help me fix it.
i got it towed to a local garage where its waiting till monday for the oil removed.
the oil by the way looks brand new,no dirt what so ever, even after a 350 mile drive by the trade driver.
has the engine been killed?
what can i do to fix it?
thought these were bullet proof,so hoping its a cash off dropping the oil etc and checking filters
any help would be fantastic
thanks

Where did you get the info that TD5's are bullet proof?

Check the oil for diesel contamination. It may be that you have bought a vehicle with a cracked head that is allowing diesel to get into the oil. If you have it could be a costly mistake. New heads are around £1200.

cheers for the reply
there is no diesel in the oil, just been serviced, oil is very clean,no oil or anything in coolant,no pressure or anything
so a massive overfill of oil can kill the engine?
whats the possibility i can change oil and its ok?
cheers

Had that happen on a old 1982 6.2 na diesel on a gmc200000on the clock just put rebuilt motor in 3500$ 7yrs ago.

i doubt somebody has over filled it by around 5-6 litres. more than likely the heads cracked and its diesel thats in the oil ( diesel is clean looking fluid ), its thinned down the oil causing knocking etc leading the major engine failure.

thanks,its a possibility isnt it.
no pressure in the system though, had a head go before, and its water that gets in the engine?
so its just a new head if thats the case?
not whole new engine.

If it's run without proper lubrication there is always the possibility that the engine could be fubared. (you did say it was knocking its tits off)

gutted
i stopped engne within seconds of the knocking
huge white smoke came out
sounds like it could be diesel

thanks
whats the chance its ok then?
never had this problem before
had cracked heads but they overheat and boil over

It depends on how long the engine ran. First thing is to check for contamination. If it is contaminated then you'll only know for sure once the head is off unless you get a bore scope on the case.

sounds like head, never thought of that as i always think water with heads.
thanks for the advice

TD5 is common rail isn't it? Brothers ford galaxy (common rail 1.9 turbo diesel engine from VW) had something similar, exactly the same symptoms - white smoke (tons of it!), knocking from bottom end, what looked to be a massive overfill of oil but turned out to be diesel. Fault with an injector.. can't remember exactly but the injector stuck open emptying diesel into the chamber at rail pressure filling cylinder with diesel - forced its way past the rings into the sump filling it up. Said injector replaced and pretty much the whole engine rebuilt... In the end it worked out that he could have got a second hand engine much cheaper!!

If its not a common rail... then ignore me! :p

Sounds to me like the engine has built up too much oil pressure and is now blowing oil past the turbo bearing and running on oil the faster the engine goes the more pressure the more oil,if it didn't go for long you may have saved the engine, the knock would be compression knock, check the turbo shaft for play!

See what your garage says. If the engine is damaged/scrapped, get the garage to write a report, then take the car back to the vendor and get a full refund of your money.

motor trade caveat emptor or buyer beware
