Hi all

I have my 300TDi in bits at the mo and was looking at testing the end float on my turbo. I have tested it by hand and it has movement up and down how do i tell what is acceptable?

Cheers

Rob

They always have slack, it's the oil bearings. The important thing is that the impeller does not touch the casing, they normally wobble a bit left/right (radiallly) but not in/out (axially).

The best test is to get it on the motor and fit a boost gauge, should start kicking in at about 1700-1800 and be maxed out at 2800-2900 with 1bar of boost max.

Any grey smoke is a sign of possible turbo failing, excess oil in pipes to plenum too, but they are always oily just not dripping.

That's about it really, wiggling the shaft does not really tell much.
