HID Kit on TD5 Facelift Legal?

already asked about 300tdi but was just wondering if the TD5 facelift model can have HID kits on them do they shine correctly?

I am sure that after market HID kits will be regarded as a MOT istant fail as of jan 2012...worth checking, think it was on here try a search, MOT, ECU chipping ect. new rules ban them.

TD5 Disco's do fit the requirement of having SLS and headlight washers however.

I have them on my pre-facelift TD5 and also had them on my G4. The proposed changed to the MoT test are still just that. It would only take a few mins to pop the halogen bulbs back in for the MoT if it does some in.

A bit like when I used to have to refit my downpipe for the MoT on my old Impreza

They may have headlight washers but doesn't SLS mean self levelling suspension? The headlights themselves have to have an automatic levelling system fitted to be legal.

haha well i already need to change side lights front and rear for mot as there leds but there less obvious than hids to police and cant afford a fine lol

whether they are illegal or not or even an MOT failure is down to the "users" discretion tbh, the fact is HID's simply dont work properly with headlamps designed for halogen filaments, bloody things should be banned imo.

I got them on mine and they look the business! BUT I am in Dubai, its almost illegal here NOT to pimp your ride! LOL

I noticed that the headlights on my Disco II are terrible, I want to fit the HID kit but have no idea which one to go for, but hearing reports that they could be an MOT failure is concerning!.. I have seen a Disco II with them fitted, and I would like to do the same..

Any more advice on which one to go for IF they are allowed

ANY advice would be much appreciated as I know nothing about these lights!

I can tell you now 100% they will be legal. The proposed changes inorder to becume more euro compliant was they must have self leveling and a washer system but it was pointed out many cars have been converted already. It has been decided that the wording will be 'if fitted, the self leveling and wash system must work' or words to that affect, this means that the items are only testable if fitted, if the vehicle has hid lights but no systems fitted they are still legal (providing they meet patterns e.t.c)

I know this as i attended the MOT seminar a few weeks back and this was gone over a few times.

can he bring his disco to you for an mot then

its a bit ambigious - int it?

umm.. why do they make things so complicated, I never understand the way the law is worded, vague to some degree.. that why I ask you lot, you know what it all means wish we were not in the EU they seem to make stupid laws for us to blindly follow.. :doh:

I've tried those 100% better 'claimed' bulbs in the past and havent noticed a great deal of difference, so I am looking towards something a bit better i.e. HID kit, but after doing a bit of research on other post it would seem there are a few things to concider, as you said, "light patterns" - but unless someone else has tried and failed surely its trial and error? (would prefer not to do that as I havent much cash at the moment) plus it's due for an mot soon as well

There are a few mixed reviews about these HID conversion kits, some like them and some hate them, - obviously I would like to stay compliant of the law, and not fail an mot, but just as important I want them to be an improvement on my Disco II - dont mind spending a bit to improve it

dont forget they are upwards of £70 a bulb and should be changed in pairs .

How easy do i need to make it?

They are 100% legal, i was told this by the area trainer for vosa, it is the new law, it is already being used now as part of the mot. All new cars will have to be fitted with washers and leveling from the factory, this is eu law and is part of the same changes as running lights and tyre pressure monitors.

As we know many people have already fitted them so vosa have decided that its a case of if you have a conversion done and you dont have washers or leveling system then it is a pass with an advisory. If you have either washers or leveling system fitted then they have to work.

There is no two ways about it, this is the law, 100%! it was questioned in the q&a sessions to death, this is the law!

As for performance wise, i personally like them but if its more light your after think about some full beam spots and maybe look into the condition of your reflectors and glass, the light units themselves matter as much if not more than the bulbs!

Here in Dubai, the brighter the better!

I retro fitted them to my last car (V70R Volvo) and performance wise they were the biz!!!!
The only thing stopping me fitting them to the Disco2 is the light washers are no longer there (winch bumper) so with a bit of road dirt on them they'd produce a lot of light scatter towards oncoming vehicles.
The only issue the MOT man had with mine were whether the light was 'white' which varies with the type 6000k in my case.
Easy job to fit but not too easy to put the old Halogens back in just for the test and I'd also want to fit the control boxes out of harms way if you're going off road.
