The thing is we have no idea what it is can anyone help me find out what it is or where to get a new one. 
First of all, do we trust garages - no!
What happens without this box connected?
What happens if you reconnect the box?
Is this a multi-disc unit mounted away from the head unit or a single play head unit?
From the pictures this looks as if it could be a remote interface connecting one item to a remote control or a head unit.
Your choices are either a L.R. dealer if it's an original unit
or the manufacturer whether it's original or not.
