Hi. Plz help me out. I have become a proud new owner of a gold disco, I WAS so excited. It needed some work doin to it as its previous owner was a young lad that just played in mud with it. The fuel selonoid (spellin) has been replaced but the rest was cosmetic.
When we got it it had been sat for 1 year not moved/started, unfortunatly we used easy start, the selonoid fixing seemed to do the trick, startin first time, after havin a run in it for about half hour/hour, it now won't start again?? My hubby is as much use as a chocolate teapot and has no clue wat to do! Please someone tell me what to check and where to start!! I wait for the glo plug light to go out before I turn It on, it tries to start just doesn't kick in!

Never use Easy Start, I think it's very bad for the engine. My Disco 2 has given a problem once or twice when it turns over not will to start. I have put it down to the imobiliser, I get out lock it and un lock it with the key fob and it starts. It's only done it 4 or 5 times in the past 2 years but locking it and unlocking it has always worked. It's not done it since I replaced the battery in the key fob just before Xmas.

If the Disco was off the road for 12 months, the very first thing I would do is give it a really good service, replace the fluids & filters. Find someone with a Nanocom and plug that it and see if it gives you any errors.

it wont hurt at all ,obviously you must have problem ,slacken injector pipe ,turn engine over as to start dont put fingers near injector while turning engine over, toi see if you have fuel.to injectors, remove and refit solenoid wire with ignition on to see if it clicks then give us more info

Well, I think you should try a couple of things...

Non starting could be several issues.

1. Fuel. Is fuel coming through? A broken fuel pump, leak, or dodgy injectors could cause the issue. To be honest, If you can ask if anyone is local to you who has a nanocom or hawkeye (Diagnostics kit) would be the ideal answer.

2. Immobiliser or electrical issue. I have had an immobiliser issue, but your would probably notice other issues if you had one and locking the car and unlocking it would normally fix it if it is just being emotional.

3. ECU (the computer with controls everything). This is a minefield that really should only be looked into by someone with the diagnostics tool. Hence my first though.. put an advert to someone who is local to you who can help.. This forum is full of helpful landy owners!!

If you feel competent, perhaps remove the injectors and check if diesel is coming through. Check the fuel pump. You will normally be able to hear it whirl. It could be something as simple as dodgy glow plugs.

Perhaps give it a good service!? But I would always try and find someone who has a nanocom or hawkeye to check for faults. The ECU will record what is and what is not working!

A garage can charge up to £80 for this, but if you ask nicely, I'm sure someone will pay you a visit!

Good luck..

Can I please ask, is it making the ticking over click when you turn the key or is it perfectly silent. I'm guessing you would have checked the battery and also try wiggling the wires on the starter motor (little silver thing with wires going to it left to the engine at the back on a 200tdi) the connectors get mucked up and could do with an emery board on em sometimes. I know I sound noobie but at least you can get the simple things out the way first.

My understanding is that Easy Start will burn off carbon from in the head and on the tops of the piston, thus reducing compression. That's why the more you use it the more it needs the next time.

who told you that because he might need to strip and build a few more ,tdi has injection pressure of 280 bar over 4000 psi they isnt alot to remove ,easy start is obviously only needed if engine worn ,if used on unworn engine it wont hurt it ,yes if you spent hours pouring the stuff in it would wash oil of bores or spent the day putting so much in it locked when turning over it could cause concievably cause damage but normal use wont hurt,if engine worn it wont make it worse but useable for a time till wear gets too bad

Thanks everyone, I have no idea about anyone with the diagnostics kit thing!
I shall be looking into all possibilities tomorrow and will get beck to u then, once again thanks!

to be honest a 200tdi doesn't a obd port to plug nanocom or haweye in(to old). Nor does it really have an ecu well it does but very basic.#
As said above crack open one injector to see if you have fuel check all four, one at a time.
If no fuel please check the list below

Lets start at the basic stuff:
blocked fuel filter
poss air getting into the lines
check the sedimenter at the rear drivers side attached the the chassis rail
lift pump bolted to the drivers side of the engine
injection pump
faulty injectors.
Mine doesn't start off the key turn the ignition on with the key, then have two switches. one sends a live feed to the fuel stop solenoid, the other is a push button starter. Don't know why it was done like that, but hey atleast i know that if the ignition switch ****s up i can still get home lol.

A '91 TDi 200 has no electronics to interrogate. Nanocom only works on TD5 engines.

If it fired up then it won't, I would be looking to check the following:

1. Fuel sedimenter - these do get clogged up with crud so the first thing to do is to remove the bowl and clean it out. You'll need an 11mm ring spanner to undo the fixing bolt.

2. Fuel lift pump - after a year's non use I would expect this to be no longer functioning, so get another one in stock - cost about £21+vat from Paddocks. Disconnect the outflow pipe andf check to see if it is still pumping.

3. Fuel solenoid - disconnect and reconnect listening for the click to show it's working.

A short squirt of easy start on the air filter is a fine way to start an engine,in the right circumstances and within parameters,as James says. Many engines in the past came with a pump inject system for volatile gas, like the Kygas system on rolls royce merlins and standard vangaurd diesels on ferguson tractors. Many commercial vehicles are available with cold climate spec including an ether (or similar volatile) start assist.Quite common in the US where you can buy the liquid in most halfords type shops, and looking at an old Ford book,D series and Cargo used them.Just think,if you give a tiny squirt, like half a second,to the air filter, the air/volatile mix has to travel all the way round the intercooler and turbo before it get to the engine. So it will be considerably less concentrated when it gets there.
So,to the OP,if you need it,theres probably a good reason, but dont be afraid to use a small amount initially,if you have to.The 200 is a pretty bomb proof engine - basic but reliable.Do the basics the guys above give, even if it doesnt cure the problem, you will know that those things are done and that lowers the amount of variables and makes it easier to narrow down.

OP,when you say "wont start"....do you mean wont turn over ? Or turns over but will not run? I have known a couple of 200 discos have ignition wiring faults and need a live from the battery to the starter solenoid to start....NOT THE BIG WIRE ! Similar to what is mentioned in an earlier post.
If it turns over and doesnt run, well thats all covered above. But no electronics or computers or diagnostics - one of the things that makes the 200 such a popular retro fit to series vehicles.
