Would like a heavy-duty rear bumper for my 95 D1 300Tdi, what I'm looking for in particular is one which will give me the ability to mount a decent central recovery point.

Any recommendations? Market for these seems to be a bit of a minefield, some products look good and others I get the feeling were knocked up in someone's shed...not cheap so want to spend my money wisely

Cheers All, Ben

I have been looking for years and I still reckon the best option is to make my own.Which isnt going to happen anytime soon.

As far as giving a "decent" recovery point goes I reckon the whole bumper and rear end would have to be modified. You know how the rear bumper is held on,right? Two bolts.Well, not even, two studs from the body. Not a lot to support a recovery point.

The best way,I would have thought, would be to do what was the old way of fitting lorry bumpers, before they made them plastic.Extend the chassis rails beyond the body and bolt a gurt huge beam across. Then the recovery points can be part of the fixing to the chassis. The lorries I had like that pulled, and were pulled by those type of points with - never a problem. And you know what?Never broke one,not one.Ropes,cables,chains,straps....yes.

But all that doesnt get you a bumper.Rock-Sliders on here supplies (makes??) some decent priced FRONT bumpers that look pretty good.I asked about back ones but didnt get a reply to that so I guess they dont do 'em.But.....if enough of us WANTED them, maybe they would. So I guess that makes two of us so far.If I like them I might even, eventually, run to one for each of my three discos. But there may have to be some serious re-design and welding to make a recovery point feasible.

Yes,but four bolts to the chassis. Please correct me,I may well be wrong, but as I remember the back bumper fits to body....doesnt it? If that is the case, that is a whole different bag of bent metal...........

Yes mate, they are out there....and I fully understand your asking for peoples experience on this. They are very costly and they dont give much info on the attachment.

Ah fair enough, I miss read the bolts to the body rather than chassis. In that case I agree with what you were saying.

I do quite like the look of that rear bumper though.

Could you not alternatively just fit jate rings to the chassis which would sort out the recovery point?

I reckon so.....but 250 quid and delivery?Thats a quarter of a half decent disco !

If Im getting ****ed that hard I want the damn thing to light me a fag, call me darling and make me a cuppa in the morning !

If you look at the following eBay listing you will see this particular item is pre-drilled for a centrally mounted recovery point, what's actually behind it I don't know but I would imagine you would want to bolt directly to the chassis rather than just the bumper itself.

DISCOVERY 1- 300Tdi HEAVY DUTY REAR BUMPER | eBay UK

I had a rear bumper, just like that....it didnt last long.
The end got snagged & as it twisted, smashed the bumper-lights to bits, & made sure I couldnt open the rear door.

I took it off, bent it straight, re-welded & tried again. Next time off roading, the same thing happend, so I took it off & threw it away as a waste of money...

I'll get a pick of my current "Work in progress" rear bumper....& post later...
