My handbrake is being a bit odd.

It wont release immediately the lever is dropped, it holds for a few seconds then the shoes come off. While it is holding/stuck the lever is very stiff, after the shoes release the lever goes back to normal????

It does have an oil leak at the usual place (output seal) but that usually just makes them slip.

Would i be looking at a new cable and shoes or is it more likely just the operating thingy in the drum full of sh1t??

From my experience with series handbrakes, they work just as well full of oil so i doubt thats the problem.

Is the oil seal a pain or easy, or even worth worrying about, the box oil level is fine from service to service.

Maybe the cable is getting seized in the route for it. Its taking a couple of seconds for the springs in the drum to ping the shoes loose cus of cable tension?

Try releasing the cable from the handbrake side and greasing/oiling the channel it runs down?

Ok, i'll whip it off and check before ordering anything.

Check your earths!!! I know it sounds strange but if your earth is bad, it will earth through the handbrake cable, and melt the inner lining, leading to a sticky handbrake! Had this happen to my 300Tdi.

Cheers!

he is just saying that if you have bad earths then the handbranke cable could have melted

its easy to run some oil down the cable from the handle end.

even better to remove the drum and release cable, then free it up/check the expander

if you had a 200 you wouldnt need to remove the drum to remove the cable :D

Yes I know about the cable acting as earth, not that in my case.

Hope to get the drum off tomorrow after fitting the PAS box. It feels like the expander jamming so I'll head straight for that I think.

300 does not have an expander like earlier models it has a lever pull on one shoe R/H this in turn pushes other shoe when resistance felt. Oil can stick shoe to drum, away to do mine tomorrow it has started to "roller brake" against drum when brake off.

ah right that explains why the cable goes in at an angle on 300s

much better design than expander, more like a conventiuonal car drum mechanism

could easily have stuck though, or needs a new cable.

complete solution? fit x brake :)

Ah so no expander then, I don't think it's oil sticking the shoes as the lever goes stiff when they are stuck, surely if the shoes were stuck to the drum, the lever would be loose?

Weather looks ok so hopefully get the tools out later.

And if anyone would like to pay for a x conversion then I will gladly fit it:D

Ok ran out of time after the PAS box jobby but checked the job out for tomorrow maybe.

It looks like there is not enough spline to be able to get the prop flange off the handbrake studs? Maybe only a quarter inch of slack?

It does not have a donut so maybe the uj conversion takes up more space? (I am guessing a donut would have been standard on my model)

So it looks like the rear joint will have to come off too :( More bolts to shift.

Hopefully tomorrow.
