Gutted

Set off this morning to Drive Strata Florida with the 4x4 Response South Wales group. Got to the beginning of the lane where the tarmac ends everything was fine. I don't think we'd done mile and suddenly there was one hell of a noise coming from the rear offside corner. A quick inspection revealed the noise was the bobbles on the tire rubbing on the end of the sill guard, nothing major we thought, jumped back in after removing the end of the sill cover and the same thing! A closer inspection revealed that the lower Tie Rod mount had sheared clean off the axle. Luckily for me a couple of the guys immediately got down in the dirt and managed to use ratchet straps (That I carry) to strap the mount back in place. They then followed me back over the rough stuff to the Tarmac and I limped 52 miles home. Had to replace the straps 8 miles from home but got back safely. So a massive thank you to the guys who did a brilliant job of getting me going albeit very slowly!!!

Does anyone know if you can but these mounts, as I might as well get 2 new ones welded on, rather than weld the old one back.

I believe you can try YRM Metal Solutions. If not a piece of box section or U channel of suitable size and thickness can be modded to suit.

022 heavy duty 6mm thick rear axle tie rod bracket

Mine did the same thing a week after i bought it. 15MPH and the smooth stuff. Got the bracket welded up, althou now i've found this thread with the link i shall be ordering two myself. Mines been welded now for over 12months without isusses

The first "repair" got me off the lane and all the way to 8 miles back home, stopping every few miles to check the straps. It was a bit carry when they snapped I was on;y doing 20 mph but I suddenly had rear wheel steering!!

I need to replace all the bushes in the arms anyway so I'll get it all sorted at the same time. I was gutted about not being able to do the lane though, I'd been looking forward to it since November.

Yes that was the one saving grace, if it had gone a few miles in, I'm not sure what we would have done. Chinook would have been the only option.

In reality though we would have had to leave it there and go back tomorrow with a gas welding kit. Thank god for ratchet straps, and they were only cheap ones from Poundland

I'm now going to invest in a range of different size ratchet straps because they saved the day, and well worth adding to your off road kit.

Spent a few hours today removing the lower link arms to get at the broken bracket, the idea was if it was just the weld that had gone, I would re-weld it on until the new Brackets come on Thursday. No such luck there was nothing to weld back! So spent an hour grinding off the old bracket ready for the new part. The pics below show what I had left of mine compared to a new one.

think that was what had gone on ours last week, aswell as the propshaft popping out. we were half way over stanage edge though.

Luckly the guys that came on after us helped strap the car together and we managed to finish/get off the lane. managed to make it back home and the OH got the car sorted now

New brackets were welded in on Monday, I've got a nice new set of Orange Poly bushes to fit to the lower link arms tomorrow with nice shiny new nuts n bolts. Not that they'll stay nice and shiny for long but I hate refitting old nuts n bolts I fitted the new bump stops yesterday and got the new T-Piece for the Headlight Washers so they now work as they should...also just had a spare key cut and was horrified when he said it was £8.00 Last time I had a key cut is cost me £2.50....
