Hi Alex, before you spend any money, check the rubber elbow coming off the turbo for leaks/splits/delamination. If that one seems ok, check the next one that goes to the bottom of the intercooler for the same.

Just checked it and found the following:
6mm of play on the shaft.
Compressor wheel has chunks missing out of it.
Smoking, but not a huge amount yet.
Alot of oil coming out of bottom IC pipe, aswell as oil, and swaf in the filter to turbo pipe.
Boost seemed to have returned for now infact it seems to have alot at the minute. However i'm fully aware that it will only get worse until it finaly gives up.
@thebiglad, all pipes seem to be in good condition, however i am thinking of upgrading to slicone hoses.
@sean, cheers for the link matey, Thinking thou the cost for a rebuild is gonna out weigh the cost of buying a second hand one. The compressor wheel fins are bent out of shape, plus i'm willing to bet that the turbine wheel is gonna be dinked also.
@v8jay, i would say that the bearing were the main cause of failure.

Ok so should it give up whilst driving, apart from alot of smoke, what else am i looking up. Are turbine wheel fragment liking to make into the intake manifold.
cheers alex

Yes pal sadly i do. However i'm right in thinking that its the factory fitted turbo. So not bad for 187,000 miles lol. I've had alook for flea bay. If only i had £2,500 spare, i'd go for the stage 2 upgrade lol. Looking like a £370 refurb unit

watch out, if the oil seals go big time, you will have a runaway engine burning it's own oil as fuel. Usually fatal to engine in short time.

Yep. "runaway diesel".....It will run off its own oil till its siezed the engine...even if oyu turn the ignition off and take the key out!!!

If it happens put it in 5th and stall or Put a rag in the intake to choke it out.

theres a video on youtube somewhere.

**** i'd forgotten about that, bit silly of me as i had a benford 9 ton dumper do that to me a few years ago. Cheers for the reminder
