Get my diff up

I was out on the lanes the other weekend and I had my diff on the mound of rutts luckly enough the mud was soft and no big arse rocks there to smash it but don't fancy trying my luck

portal axles might be a tad expensive though..lol

bigger tyres is the way to go.. but the bigger you go the more modifications you'll have to do..

suspension lift, camel cut on the arches, etc... so the tyres dont rub

I've never understood the inner workings of a portal axle, but it looks as though the differential housing is above the centre of the wheel hubs?! Could just be an optical illusion.

Basically, you've got it. This pic illustrates it quite well:

Forgot to say, the other advantage of a portal hub is that it can be an additional stage of gear reduction. This means that the gearbox, transfer box and diffs don't need to transmit as much torque - so they can be smaller/lighter.

Saw a set on eBay a few weeks back, much smaller construction, chain drive, no reduction

They only offset the hubs about 2" I reckon.

Those killer axles ones look very heavy and very expensive!!

Bet it makes for interesting steering too!

are you sure no reduction ,doesnt have to be but normally is to reduce torque upto final drive axle salisbury with reduction drive making portal axle,as a matter of interest with the tractcrs the drop box with gears or chain was bolted either vertically or progressively round axle tube to give different heights, where dropped as drop box wasnt strong enough as higher horse power came out and bigger wheels with epicyclic and no drop box was used

yes mate i saw in side the casings and you can see there was no redcution

they were made for farmers wanting bolt on ground clearance or competitors who wanted to run portal, but could remove them for certain events which did not allow portal etc.

imho they appeared quite flimsy compared to those killer axles.

and yes top, qt diff and steering arm guard, slider style, 50 quid, done :)
