1997 300tdi 5 speed.:) going to change gear box oil after search was going to use mtf94 but was told by local garage to use aqf. which do i use:confused:

ok simple answer is best stuff

Difflock Evolution One for gear box
Difflock Evolution TWO transfer box and axles

or if you want to keep it cheep EP90 and ATF

although atf would do nicely and was recommended for r380 to begin with ,i rebuild a lot and atf will protect your box as much as any oil,the same lubrication or lack of it are still as evident with mtf

isnt gear change less notchy with MTF94 it is in my own experience

Yep, MTF94 is available at a decent price, it's recommended by Land Rover, and most of us use it... You may find it's actually cheaper from your local LR dealer (I did).

The Difflock stuff is supposed to be better.

As above, MTF...wouldn't do it myself.

im not saying mtf isnt good just that for wear atf is as good and often with either, you do tend to find boxes often dirtier inside with mtf than atf presumably atf has more detergent

I put ATF in mine on first service, it had syrup in there before! The gear change was much easier, second service I put mtf in and it was better still, I'm sticking with mtf now (or the shell equivalent anyway)

The change quality of the R380 gearbox is adversely affected by the poor of operation of the synchros, as I understand it.

Using ATF gives too much slip so the synchros don't work correctly, whereas MTF 94 and EVO1 have friction modifiers to correct this.

not true synchro wear is still as evident as ever was with atf the main problem is baulk ring hasnt got dog teeth all the way around it unlike most baulk rings, ive stripped and checked thousands and its the outer teeth thatwear first and dirty oil thru lack of servicing that takes in surface out

Yeah as above, its frequency of changing rather than the exact type of oil, so long as its more/less within the viscosity requirement of the gears and synchros. So, when you use your very expensive synthetic (typically about 3x the price) are you tempted to leave it in 3x longer, or are you going to change it every year/12,000 miles like the service interval suggests?

Well personally I give my motors the best I can afford and am repaid with reliability.

I use synthetic transmission oils which cost about double the price of mineral oils and I change them every 10,000kms.
