This is my first post here , so I hope I am doing it right

I am presently modifying my discovery 300 tdi ( lift , snorkel, etc) as I am doing a charity rally next month and it has been laid up for a couple of weeks as I have had to replace the starter motor . I changed it this evening and great it started first time BUT...

When i tried to engage first it would not go in, either would reverse . It works fine with the engine off or the transfer box in neutral but not in high or low. It feels like the clutch is engaging - the pedal has normal resistance .

Can anybody help or if worst comes to worst can anybody recommend a good garage near Bridgend South Wales that I can get it towed to?

Many Thanks

Al

have you had a judder from the clutch before this happened. Does the clutch pedal go all the way down?.
I had this with mine, and the clutch plate had split.

No it was fine when I parked it up , about 3 weeks ago, the only problem I had with the gearbox beforehand was with reverse , it would not stay engaged far enough to make the reversing lights stay on . I presumed this was a problem with the micro switch at the gear lever end

Mine jumps out of reverse, and second. I'm wondering if water has got in and seized the clutch plate. You didn't leave the starter out for three weeks did you.

The starter was only out for 48 hours , while I took it to the shop to see if it could get reconditioned
The disco was standing because we were building expedition boxes in the back and it was only when we tried to start did we realise the starter was siezed

Somebody else reckons it is the Centre plate is stuck to the flywheel after being stood so I am going to try and get it unstuck tomorrow

i've had a few trackair's do this, always water gotten into the bell housing and rusted the plate to the fly wheel. this is what mine looked like

The more I think about it , It is starting to sound like the plate has rusted to the flywheel , when I took the starter motor it has rusted solid , hence the reason for a new one so it is highly likely the last owner did a bit of wading and it has all rusted from being standing ,

Oh well either off to the garage or me on the driveway this weekend changing a clutch !

Thanks for all the advice

Al
