free wheeling hubs

Why would you want too?

It seems like a **** load of work and hassle for no real reason and I'm no mechanic but I reckon there's a lot more to it than putting fwh on it.

free wheeling hubs are supposed to stop the front wheels turning the drive shafts in the front axle when the vehicle is in rwd mode , they wont do anything anything on a disco unless you remove the front prop.

which brings the question are you a troll or just stupid

you can get a freewheeling hub kit for defenders ,disco ,and classic rr. series ones dont fit ,they come with a diff kit in which you remove t/box diff gears and replace with kit which locks rear output to diff casing ,4wd only achieved when selecting diff lock

This is a VERY BAD IDEA.

The reason Discos and Defs were made permanent 4 wheel drive was to share the drive load between two prop shafts, the diffs in two axles, and four drive shafts instead of two. That is, all the transmission parts after the transfer box only carry HALF the load the rear half would carry in two wheel drive.

To subject the rear axle to a permanent DOUBLE load seems like not a good plan to me. And why not make it FRONT wheel drive?

Why not sell the Disco cheap to a Landy enthusiast, and then buy a Slitty 4x2?

i didnt say it was a good idea just that it was an option, you could do it have front wheel drive as front output is only one that can be locked unlocked using diff lock, you wouldnt be able to lock rear axle to get 4wd ,rear axle more than good enough to carry vehicle, the diff kit is very useful when putting 5speed boxes and lt230s in series vehicles ,iprefer permanent 4wd thats why i run a borg warner in my discovery

Who on earth does these???? Doesn't make sense.

Why run a Borg Warner in a discovery, they were all permanent 4WD anyway....

brcause the torque has to be split between axles whatever conditions.with an lt230 you can lose all torque through one axle unless you use diff lock which you cant on the road ,where as the viscous unit in borg warner removes wind up (as long as its not siezed)

because the borg warner enables you to drive in difflock without getting wind up (as long as viscous isnt siezed)

If the centre diff is LOCKED, you WILL get prop-shaft wind-up.

This will happen if the viscous coupling part is seized.

The Borg-Warner unit is a DIFF but with viscous coupling properties built-in.

The official word is ....

All models are fitted with a Borg Warner transfer box.
The transfer box is a four wheel drive, two speed ratio
reducing gearbox with high and low range outputs
selected electrically by the driver.
A differential is fitted between the front and rear output
shafts to allow the propeller shafts to rotate at different
speeds when the vehicle is cornering. Drive to the
front propeller shaft is through a viscous coupling,
which eliminates the requirement for a differential
lock.

sorry to upset so many people with just a question
Ah but what a question! Congratulations you've won this month's Dull Question of the Month contest and you've been automatically entered in the Dull Question of the Year contest. Watch this space, you could win it.
Seriously though, have a good read of the forum and familiarise yourself with how Land Rovers actually work, it will save a lot of **** taking.

glad to see another forum with a bunch of small minded people that have nothing better to do than critisize others and buy the way i come from a land rover family my dad has owned 2 series 1, 4 series 2 and a couple of series 3's and i have had a series 1 and a series 3 but this is my first disco and i do enjoy a bit of circle work in the mud and it is easier to do in 2wd than it is in 4wd and as for owning a pajero i know what i would prefer to drive long distance in so if you don't want to give a realistic answer to a genuine question from a new disco owner don't bother posting in this thread thanks

Get ****ed you arsehole.
Disco's are permanant 4 wheel drive, if you want selectable 2/4 wheel drive then stick with your ****ty slitty. Why did you get a disco if the mitsu****ti is so good:doh:
The only 'circle work' you do is rimming your boyfriend.
