Hi recently moved to South Africa, have bought a 2002 Discovery TD5 to go touring off road. Believe it or not has had some £6000+ spent in the 15 months prior to me buying it! Its don around 130k miles.

Anyway the issue is that it totally lacks power below 2200 RPM and will not even climb a slight incline in 4th below 1500 RPM basically I have to change down to get it above 2200 for it to go. No lack of power above this RPM. I previously owned a brand new TD5 in 2000 which I cannot remember being this under powered even though turbo lag was always pretty bad.

I am very familiar with common rail turbo diesels and their electronics so I am a little lost on this one. I can confirm the following was changed prior to my purchase and all within 10,000 miles:-

No EGR or Cat fitted as its an SA spec.
Fuel pump Changed
Injector wiring harness changed

I have checked and replaced the following as I was convinced this would be the problem. Going to order a Nanocom but really would like to get it sorted before it arrives.

The exhaust manifold is not blowing
Intercooler hoses changed
MAF changed
Fuel regulator changed

Finally car starts fine and cruises at 70 MPH on the Freeway no problem. Just a small puff of blue smoke when pulling away from cold (new turbo bearings and seals on their way at Easter from the UK as I am hoping this is the problem!)

Any ideas from you TD5 guru's?

had similar with my 110 double cab fitted new MAF and wound turbo up a turn on the waste gate lever runs much better and picks up and goes like a greased pig now ;):D

Hmmm.. did think about it but 15 to the gallon only gives a range of 300 miles.. TD5 around 550.. and very few stations sell petrol in Mozambique.

It was a very close call ... I think a remap once I get my Nanocom is on the books + a girt big intercooler to reduce EGT and avoid manifold warp.

190 GG's  BTW any one fitted a VNT and does that improve low down pull?

I think you'll find there's nothing wrong with the car ,mine was just the same,I had mine remapped and never looked back ,totaly transformed the car , it now powers uphill with bags of tourqe
