Got my 200tdi MOT'd today and as title suggests it's failed. I'm a bit annoyed as from what I can see it failed on two pathetic reasons that would have taken less than 10 minutes to correct.

Firstly it failed on headlight adjustment both were aiming too high, they wouldn't correct today for some bizarre reason so I'm now having to wait until Monday. Secondly it failed as the power steering was working intermittently as it was low on fluid. I know a bit silly as I should have topped it up but I didn't notice until 10 last night and I leave for work at 5 so had no chance of gettin any to top it up.

All in all I now have no car until at least Monday evening if not later and am going to spend about 5 minutes sorting it out.

Tbh that should be on the list of "things to check before MOT".

Both easy driveway fixes, get em sorted and bak for a retest.!!

Surely those fails come under basic weekly check's? Yes it's annoying and mess's up your weekend, I'm just curious as to why the MOT station did not allow you some time to make good those small issue's whilst the car was in for the MOT ... I know mine does, as it save's them time in having to then do a re-test..

Yer I completely agree that I should have checked it first but ive been doing 6 til 6's for the last 2 weeks so been running short on time.

At the risk of soundin stupi (well even more) how do I check the headlights on the drive?

The garage I use would have corrected those faults free of charge whilst doing the test. They do the same for wiper blades, bulbs and other silly little faults.
They're a dedicated testing station and do free re-tests, so they have no incentive to find things to fail it on. They do charge full price for the test though.

Oh and the chief tester is my Son.

It tells you that in Haynes.

Well, it does in my ancient copy anyway.

All you need is a garage door / wall and a tape measure.

I better get myself a copy of a Haynes manual then.
I have always had small things like that done if needed to pass before but there's a new tester so I guess it's not his style.

I admit that I should probably do these sort of checks from now to now but I've only just finished it after I did an engine swap and a bucket load of welding so haven't used it in about 5 months just been sitting on the drive

I've always adjusted mine by driving up to a fence/wall with dip on and marking where it lights on it and then reverse back about 10 foot and adjust them to these marks, never had them fail yet.

Count yourselfs lucky I failed a recent mot for political reasons, had my vehicle checked prior to mot break pipes were mentioned specifically as being fine, went for mot straight fail on break pipes, not clean up or replace if damaged just a straight fail, went back to garage was told again that break pipes were completely fine but because of a straight fail they had to be replaced, the joys of living in northern Ireland

I try to take mine for it's MOT in the month leading upto it's due date, then you have time to fix it before it's off the road. They still start the new ticket on the expirey date of the old one so you don't have anything to loose.

Mind you last year I forgot and ended up doing it a few days after it expired!

My MOT place also charges full price but sorts minor things out in that price like realignment etc.

I do the same, this year I missed out on the 13 month MOT by one day - It was easier to get it in to them on Tuesday rather than the Wednesday.

It just sounds like general lack of interest in looking after the vehicle to me.

As drivers we are all responsible for ensuring our vehicles are maintained and should be doing daily and weekly checks - how long does it take to lift the bonnet and check coolant, engine oil and pas levels? 30 seconds?

It's not the fact I'm disinterested in it at all. The power steering I know was a stupid mistake that I will never repeat. But I had no idea about the headlights.

Also if I was really dis interested do you think I would have bothered putting in a new engine and doing loads of welding?

Well I'm sorry your car failed it's mot but really to fail on such stupid and easy to fix things is really just thoughtless.

You mean like when you left that old sealing ring stuck on the fuel filter housing.................... and lost a tank of diesel ? :D
