Hi,

just checked the oil level on our new (to us!) Disco II 2.5TDi. The handbook gives several grades, which I guess depends on where you are going to be using the vehicle. My question is, what should I top it up with as it is below the fill line (in fact it is just above the 'nipple' on the end of the stick which is very low, but no oil warning light on)?

Many thanks

PP

p.s. use is on-road in the UK only.

As far as I have always been told you should never mix oils - use the same type which was used in the last oil service....

Its make it worse if you mix synth with normal - so ask the garage who serviced it last to see what was used if you dont know.

OR do an oil and filter change..... to be on the safe side.

i would do an oil and filter change anyway . to let the oil get that low would not give me confidence in the last owners maintenance regime.
use a good quality 10 - 40 semi synthetic

Thanks Jothina

The car is a one previous owner with full Main Dealer service history, last serviced in September 06. I guess the owner just didn't check it between services...

I always use 5W 30 to ACEA A1 spec.

Your oil warning light will not come on because the oil level is low, this light is only to warn of low oil pressure.

I phoned the dealership in Kelso and got put through to 'Service' department. I was a little surprised that the guy on the phone didn't give a definitive answer....merely his 'thoughts'. It seems strange to me that a main dealer cannot tell you what oil they put in your car last September........I guess he just couldn't be bothered to ask someone who is still on the spanners in the garage next door to his shiny office!

I spoke to a local independant specialist and he said 5W/30 semi-synthetic, so that's what I have done.

Anyone had any dealings with LRC 4x4 in Congleton as they are just round the corner and the local main dealer is half an hour away?

Cheers.
