Hi Guys,

Hoping you can help...

A small bit of the metal barrell on my drivers side lock has snapped off, meaning that I can't lock the door.

I was hoping that I could perhaps spot weld something into this, but its cast aluminium and nothing is working. Even tried liquid metal stuff in the hope that when it dries it would be strong enough, but it just cracks and falls out.

So, I'm giving up and decided to get a new barrell. Its definateley not the way i wanted to go as I will have a door key and an ignition key.

Does anybody know of a way to fix the barrell, or where I can get a replacement?

Thanks All,
L

I think if you get a new door barrel, then you'll have 2 different sets of keys, one for the igntion and one for the door... fokin pain in the arse....

someone might have come across this problem... there must be an easier way?

Cant a main dealer help you ? I had a problem with the GFs Peugot. The ignition barrel siezed. I thought it would mean a new barrel and a new key meaning she would have the same problem as you, a key for the door and a different key for the ignition. Peugot wanted the VIN number of the car and two weeks later a new barrel, same as the old one.. Magic! Wasnt cheap !! If I had known the cost when I ordered it I would have done the teethsucking "Cant be done " act.

its hard to fix though... the barrel is ali and plastic...
when you put the key all the way in the plastic bit engages on an alli bit to turn the lock...

on his case, the alli has broken on one side, meaning you can easily open the door, as the ally bit, where the plastic catches, is there.

but it wont close and the ally broke on the other side of the plastic bit.... hooo bollox its too hard to explain without a picture!

As to LR coming up with a key, yes,as far as I know they can,or at least they could in the past.It might be worth going through an independent dealer who has a good relationship with them and can get them to listen...probably a better price, too.

Have you thought about a locksmith?A real locksmith, not a key cutting shop.I had a bloke in bristol who would match locks to keys, split barrels and fix back together, put new pins in,all sorts.Worth calling a couple, regular lock guys and specialist auto blokes and seeing what they can do.........

we have the same problem on our 300tdi at work

i took it all apart thinking it was something simple and realised the barrel is broken

ok so you need a new barrel : cannot buy

new door handle and key from britpart, about 100 quid

what you and i need is to find a car at a scrappy still with its keys

buy the handle and ask to borrow the keys.

put your key in your barrel, remove the circlip on the end of the barrel and pull the barrel out the handle.

do the same for the new barrel/handle

you now have two barrels with keys in

you need to remove both keys, and then set the barrels down

remove all the little tumblers from both barrels (they are like teeny flat plates, about 4mm x 8 mm) and set them down, in order, above the barrels. ideally do this on a clean towel/bench etc

take the tumblers from your barrel and fit them in the same order to the new barrel. this is fiddly but not actually technically difficult. when they are all in they will be sticking out at all different places. this is what stops the barrel from turning

when they are all in, carefully slide your key into the barrel, making sure non of them spring out. when the key is fully in the tumblers should all drop down into the barrel making a smooth cylinder

slide this into the handle and replace the circlip

check it works, hey presto, return keys to breaker and fiut handle to your door.

original keys. ta darrr :)

Bought complete handle inc. barrel fro land rover dealer for £38.00 for 2001 P38 - ordered off of VIN to match

When we bought our 200 yonks ago it had 5 different keys....
