Dear All:

I've still got vibration problems on my D2. I got the cross joints changed on the UJs, and this improved things a bit, but really the vibes are still there and I'm not happy driving it like that. The sharfts themselves look straight, su suspicion falls on:

  • The rubber GNK "donut"
  • The centring bearing

Would these still make tht much difference, even after the UJs have been done (and before that shocks, tyres disc rotors changed, and wheels balanced and aligned)?

I've looked at the donut. It doesn't look too bad: cracks appear if I bend it, and the rubber's gone a bit hard, but it isn't falling apart. Is it possible for the donut to be shot even if it looks ok-ish to a visual inspection (I'd change it anyway, but parts can be difficult to locate out here in Bahrain).

The bearing is unavailable in the GCC region, I'd have to order it specially. Is that likely to be the cause of the vibes?

Might there be any non-driveshaft causes of my vibes? I'm still getting the 3 Amigos, but jacking the car up and spinning the wheels no noise seems to come from the bearings, and the wheels seem to turn smoothly. I've had both front wheels up, and both seem to turn easily and independently, so I don't think I have a viscous issue with the transfer box. Might the problem be the bi-metallic flywheel? My D2 is a V8, and I've only heard this being a problem with TD5s.

As always, and help much appreciated.

Agreed, change the doughnut. Make sure you get a proper GKN branded service kit though, don't buy one of the cheap clones.
You'll be changing it again in a few months, guaranteed.

Absolutely. The branded kit comes with new nuts/bolts. Dead easy to fit as long as you have a good pry bar
