Hi

My drivers-side trailing arm snapped the other day whilst going round a bend on the road. (I never off road)

I replaced both sides with new bushes and trailing arms

It seems to still wander.

Is their a certain way you install the arms?

or it is just bolt to the rear then tighten up with the large nut at the end?

Thanks

Andy

How good is your a frame ball joint?.now you got new arms and bushes its more than likely showing you what else needs doing.

I am a bad mechanic yup :)

replaced all the bushes on the rear trailing arm.

I have got a new A bar with new bushes and new A frame balljoint. I just have not got round to fit it yet. would this cause a slight wandering feeling?

also is there a special way of fitting the training arm? or when I tighten the large nut at the end would this pull the rear trailing arm tight so equal on both sides?

Andy

Do the nut up till the bush is held tight... For some sort of reference make sure there is equal amount of thread showing out of each nut.

Have fun with the a frame ball joint. They're a bitch, also don't forget the panhard rod. That can add a lot of wander

Kinda sorted the wandering out, one of the nuts were loose on one side!!! think it might of been because I left the washer off the big nut end.
So unscrewed both nuts and put washers on ect, tightened up and no wandering as of yet. Think the front radius arm bushes need replacing. Will be doing the A bar this Saturday, got all new bolts ect so can just cut the old ones off :)

Sorry for being silly whats/where is the panhard rod?

andy

have a look at your front axle. It will be the long bar behind you steering drag link. It Holds your front axle in relation to your chassis.

Good way to test, look at the panhard bushes, axle and chassis, and get someone to rock the steering back and forth. If your chassis moves side to side then you have issues

Can't recommend enough a full poly bush kit. Restores that 'new land rover' feeling and although there is a fair bit of labour, 'tis cheap enough.

Otherwise just work through systematically as you are :)

also take alook at the brackets that are welded to the axle, if not the bushes, as mine sheard off at the axle, due to rust. the brackest can be bought

Well it's started wandering again :( think the lock nut may of come loose again!! how many times can you use the nylon lock nuts? as in take them off/on.
Are all lock nuts the same?

Once - any more than that, yu are risking it. having said that most peeps have. they are other ways of making a stiff nut tho, centre punch on a flat, squeeze in vice, etc. but for a few pence, it aint worth it.

I did put new lock nuts on, started wandering, so checked the nuts and one was loose. But I was taking them off because I forgot to put the washers on. so took both off placed washers on, it was fine for a few miles and now its wandering again. got a feeling 1 of the nuts could be faulty. will replace with new nuts and get some lock tight paste too :) should do the job I hope.

Okay, put my new A-frame on today, new bushes and joint ect :)

checked all nuts on my Trailing arms and they are all tight.

but disco still seems to wander did check at the front and nothing was moving around.

Would the rear anti roll bar give the effect of the rear wandering?

Doubt it mate. What wheels have you got on? My mate has 235/85 insa turbos on his and he complains of wandering.

Check your tyre pressure?

Got standard 16" 235 70 16 I think.

Might check the pressure but they look okay. But I am ready for changing the whole rear axle at this rate :( ordered all new front radius arm bushes and nuts ect. Will do it this saturday with some luck. + I will be sunroof-less because they are getting plated over :)
