Discovery TD5- Fuel Filter

Have just bought a Disco TD5 and followed links on changing fuel filter, only problems is the filter itself is now hot, is this common or am I paranoid !!! Any help greatly appreciated.
 
There is nothing to worry about it the fuel is hot because it is pumped from the tank at a high pressure and the fuel is recirculated from the engine all the time but the main reason the fuel is hot is because the fuel goes though the cylinder head to the injectors so it will get up to the same temp as the coolant.

In the TD5 engines, the fuel becomes EXTREMELY hot because it is compressed to enormous pressures in the Lucas-Delphi Injectors. The pressures involved are TEN TIMES what would be "normal" for most engines with injection pumps. Most of the compressed - and now very hot - fuel is not injected, but is returned to the fuel gallery, and sent back to the filter head and the fuel tank. However, the fuel is so hot that it isn't safe to send it straight back, so there is a RETURN FUEL COOLER on the right side of the cylinder head - a head exchanger between radiator coolant and the hot fuel - that takes the fuel temperature down to manageable levels, but this could still be 70°C, which is Goddam HOT.

So sure, you will find your fuel filter getting pretty warm.

I recently changed my fuel filter and noticed the self same thing - it appeared to be worse until the fuel system had bled properly - in discussion with an ex LR mechanic mate it is important that you follow the fuel air bleed process imediately after a filter change (I'll know for next time then !!)
BTW I do all my own servicing, it is SO easy, and LR prices are hideous.

p.s does anyone know how often I should change the brake fluid and antifreeze, the book says 20k miles which seems daft ?

That is about right 20k the antifreeze should be pink in colour that is long life antifreeze and you should use the same again.LR don't suggest using blue antifreeze.Brake fluid should be replaced with dot 4 fluid don't mix synthetic brake fluid with dot 4 so I don't recommend trying synthetic fluid.And only use new bottles of brake fluid not old one's that's being on the shelf for years because it absorbs water over time and that is not a good thing when the fluid gets hot.

The Landrover Manual does not give a bleeding procedure for the fuel filter replacement, all thats required is, remove the old one and screw on the replacement. I usually fill the filter with diesel before fitting though, just to avoid excess air in the system.

Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years. Coolant at 36K and 72K - its and OAT based coolant so tends to last longer.

re bleeding proceedure - I know it's not in the manual, it was advice given by a LR mechanic !!

I guess your method of filling the filter beforehand with fuel works just as well, and probably quicker !
