Discovery 1 - Potential swap for my VW Polo - worth it?

Hi all,
Firstly, sorry for my first message here being about asking for advice, but I've searched the forums (and most of google) but can't seem to get a straight answer to my question!
To set the scene... I've got a 1998 VW Polo that I have had up for sale as we now need a 4wd (combination of poor road conditions to the kids nursery and all this snow means a lowered polo isn't exactly ideal!) and a bloke has offered to swap me his 1990 Disco 1. Now, I know nothing about Disco's so I've been searching around for info on them to work out if it's a good deal or not...
Can anyone give me any advice?
Here's the full info I've got from him over the past few days:
Disco 1 1990 2.5 TDi 3 door, 208k, brakes need bleeding, tyres and suspension fine, all electrics working fine, lots of history, rust hole in engine bay (size of a 5p, not structural and dry, not got any bigger in the 4 years he's had it), Tax till end Jan, Test till April, 2 inch lift kit, pro comp springs and dampers with spring guards, wax oiled underneath, polybushed, new boot floor, dislocation cones, weller steels, cooper discoverer st tyres, safari snorkel, brownchurch roof rack, front bar with two spotlights, sump guard, rear arches are camel but, sills are mint, cb radio.
And here's my car, that I may swap... worth up to £1200:

cant believe a 1990 disco ant got more rust somewhere !! whats the asking price for the disco ??
with all those bits bolted on to it its defently been used and abused off road be caucious

check front inner arches and battery tray and side sills..any rust there its gonna cost you at mot time.

So is a 1 litre Polo in white, on that basis I'd say its a fair swap.

I'd be very cautious

If it's as good as he says then bite his hand off. BUT get someone who knows disco's to give a good going over before you swap. Or better tell him you'll do the deal if he takes it for an mot. if it fails no deal if it passes you'll swap and pay the MOT cost.

its got all the off road bits so has been abused...

but youve got to be mad to consider it at all.... its a 3 door .... total pain in the butt with nursury school age kids.... youve got to strap them in kids seats in the rear.... sell the vw and get a 5 door disco

Thanks for the advice guys. I have got some photos of it "in action" green laneing, but am still waiting for the proper ones of each side, interior etc...
I'm starting to think that the 3door thing may be an issue too... but also starting to really fancy a Land Rover... hmmmm...

I got a mint not one bit of rust anywhere 1995 300tdi es with leather £1225 bolt on bits but not seen offroad until now!

Well you will get cheap classic insurance as its 20 years old if you want it.

It sounds a good deal but id want the brakes sorting out first. If they only need bleeding why hasnt it been done?

Seized/snapped nipples perhaps?

Since the Polo is a 3 door version - he's used to 3 doors - But I would never consider a 3-door car as a family transporter - NEVER!!!

The suggestion about you paying the MOT if it passes seems very fair...



And of course the VW Polo is rubbish on snowy roads the way it has been lowered - it must be rubbish even on normal roads with that "height" LOL - You have a VW Snowplough!!!

But be carefull with that Disco - sounds like a lemon to me..... Nice and shiny on the inside - but the content....

Try a website called swapz matey thats where i got mine from. Swapped my zafira for the disco lol. Defo get some one who knows landies to check it over first. Wish i had done that now, as it cost me some to get my car right. I to would agree that this one sounds alittle like a lemon to me but you won't know till you see it really places to check for rot are:
inner and outer sill
front inner wings
battery tray
rear arches
boot floor
body mounts
rear crossmember
bottoms of roof pillars
floor pans.
Not all doom and gloom thou, and it will be worth it
