Is this a TDi 200 or 300? Manual or auto box?

auto gear change is done with govenor in rear housing of auto box oit can be looked at with out stripping main box ,kick down cable also effects gear change, make sure cable is adjusted correctly and as said changing oil can help as atf has detergent qualities which can make gear changes worse to start with as it effect govenor ,but would surely help with yours

Thanks for the input sorry I didn't give more info as you can probably guess i'm new and not as quick or geared up as you lot lol, It's a 300 tdi auto 94, Checked the fluid level and it's been changed recently (not by me) its probably over full if owt.

Thanks for the advice. sorry for the delay just got in from work. I will try that first bringing the fluid level back to normal, would it be better to change the trans fluid altogether????

Yes definitely, then you'll know for sure that it's been done correctly. Here's a couple of thoughts:

1. Examine the old oil when it comes out for quality: it should be red and clear with no burnt smell - and quantity: there should be about 4.5ltrs of oil comes out.

2. When refilling, put in about 2 ltrs (via the dipstick tube), then start the engine and LEAVE IT RUNNING, cycle through each gearbox position in turn (and leave for a couple of seconds to take up drive) ie R, then D, 3, 2, 1 then back to P. Now continue to refill the box until it reads correctly on the dipstick. Should take about 4.5ltrs.

as oil is detergent ,oil change can clean govenor and make its alter its operation for the worse or better, but if change is poor obviously worth a go ,a bit easier than removing it off back end and cleaning it yourself ,but it was very common fault after oil change

I remember seeing something about this in the dreaded LRO mag, doesnt the output shaft show a load of particles when you disconnect.....or something????But hopefully it wont go that far and oil and filter will sort you !

Thanks, changed the ATF today and the old stuff that came out was very dark red in fact nearly brown and did smell of burn nothing like the new fluid i put in. I'm delighted to say that seems to have done the trick drives totally different now, thanks again for the advice. think it might be worth giving the engine a oil and filter change so will probably be seeking advice in the near future thanks again.:;)
