can any one tell me if the front indicators on a 2000 disco td5 should be lit (not flashing) when the headlights are turned on?

Yes, they should.

If you look at the indicator units or the handbook, you'll see that there are two bulb holders in each unit.

One is the front indicator, the other is a 'side marker light'

NO... 'indicators' should not be permantly lit on any vehicle in the uk
And as your year 2000 disco is pre "face lift" so it doesen't have the seperate indicator lens and side marker lens both housed within the same big head lamp unit, you have a problem.

And :welcome2:to the Forum

No he doesn't. On pre facelift cars there are extra bulbs in the front indicators to act as side markers. On my '99 car however there are no such bulbs in the rear clusters???

As I said in my post above - pre-facelift Discovery II's have front side marker lights built in to the front indicators.

See the attachment to my post above - the page from the Owner's Handbook on changing the bulbs.

.

I see lots of cars have side marker lights now even my companys Accord has them at the front.
The fitment must be there as part of the standard NAS spec that newish cars now have as there's no requirement in the uk, but nothing new even old Jags had reflectors in the bumper end caps front and rear.

I think your getting confused between your marker lights and your indicators, with your engine running turn on your side lights and on a pre facelift you should have in the upper corner of the indicator lens a constant orange marker light.
Then turn on your indicator and you should have an additional flashing indicator aswell as the marker light, if so all is well.
