Hi,

Today I gave my D2 and complete oil change. I changed Axel oil, transfer gear box, engine oil and the automatic gear box oil. Here I came across a problem.

In rRAVE it states that the oil volume of the auto gear box is 9.6 litres. I followed the instructions when draining. I removed the drain plug let it run until empty and I even let it stand overnight so I could get new washers from my local shop the next morning before putting the plugs back in. Overnight about an additional 1/4 litres came out but in my mind it was empty.

I replaced the plug and started to fill. All was going well and I was waiting for the overflow before switching on the motor and going through the gears as instructed in RAVE. The overflow came, I put in the plug temporarily, switched her on and ran through the gears. I then switched her off and topped up and reåeated this process until I had a steady stream from the overflow.

So ...the problem.....I was only able to get 5 litres into the gear box? I took the car out ran her a while and then checked the levels again but the gear box is full of oil? I am worried that 5 litres of the old oil was remaining. When you look at the auto gear box it looks too small for 9.6 litres.

Can anyone advise me here. Have I not drained the gear box in the correct manner or is there something else I have done wrong?

Regards

Thanks Fanatic,

Aha, so I guess thats where the other 5 litres was hiding......I am looking at RAVE now to see where the cooler and torque converter are. I assume this mean that the whole system does not drain by following the instructions in RAVE but that its only a partial drain? If so can you provide any guidance on how to make a complete drain of the auto gear box. a it would appear that I have wasyed 5 litres of new oil by mixing it with 5 litres of old oil.........bugger

torque converter is bolted to flywheel instead of a clutch on a manual transmission.
Oil cooler will be at front of vehicle and fed from two pipes from gearbox.

Auto boxes have been known to react badly to oil changes due to dislodging small particles.

My advice is you have done the filter and if oil remains clean and you followed instructions to obtain correct level-leave it.

If you feel the oil colour has improved, but not perfect-repeat oil changes.

My advice is caution and like an engine oil change-never remove all of it.
