Hi all.
I have recently bought a td5 disco and the other day it ran very low on fuel but not out. A strange noise was coming from the rear of the car. My boy friend thinks it probably the fuel pump.
We put in 20 ltrs of fuel but now it won't start! Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
Danielle.

:welcome2:

There is a chance that there is air in the fuel line, turn the key to the second position so that all the lights on the dash comeon, then pump the throttle pedal all the way to the floor and back 5 times.
You will hear the pump at the back of the car run for 30secs, then off for about 5 or 10 secs. It will do this 6 times, then the car should start.

Thanks minidod,
I'll get him outdoors to give it a try and see what happens. Fingers crossed.
Is this some thing that will be happening all the time if the tank gets low on fuel?
Do you think it needs a new pump?

Easiest thing to do is not let it get low in the first place. Easier said then done some times I know.

The pump should be ok I done this to mine a couple of years ago when I was late getting to the garage but thought it's ok I'll get it in the morning, but became stuck on a small hill on the way home and had to pour fuel from a can in a thunder storm.

If you are still have problems I would change the fuel filter as the pump could have sucked some rubbish off the bottom of the tank and blocked the filter. (It's behind the back driver side wheel)

Just tried it but still no workie. Battery sounds a little weak now as well. Is it worth doing it again but have it connected to jump leads?
Thanks you lot, you landy guys are great.

I would change the filter first before trying anymore atempts at starting her. It's an easy job and any good motor factors or Halfords should have one and you need no tools for it.

The official Land Rover method for purging air from the fuel system is as follows:

1. Turn the key to pos II with all the dashboard lights on, leave like that for three minutes, then start the engine with the accelerator pedal pressed to the floor. as soon as the engine is running smoothly, release the pedal and allow to tick over.

Well it is now waiting to be carried off by an ambulance having been condemned by the AA man having found problems with the fuel pressure regulator:mad:
