Hi all, have been a member of this site now for a while, having spent some time reading through peoples problems on here it is now my time to ask for some help.

My 300tdi EDC Auto has developed a clunk/banging sound coming from the rear axle when on full or a tight lock. I drove with full lock in a cirlce today in an emty car park and when hanging my head out the window i could see the drivers side rear wheel locking for a second then releasing, causing the wheel to also skid for a moment. This problem only seems to happen when on slow tight turns And roundabouts and dosent happen when driving in a straight line or on a dual carriageway etc. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. :)

You are asking for a wrecked steering box!

NEVER force a power assisted steering box hard on full lock, because

(1) it won't go any further than full lock no matter how hard you try and

(2) by turning the steering wheel hard against the stops you are forcing the whole power steering system to operate at the very limits of its ability if not past that limit, and something will give, sooner or later.

but never mind coz it sounds like yer diff is knackked

Who said i was 'forcing it hard' on full lock?? I said its producing the banging/knocking noise the most while its on full lock or a tight turn ie a tight turning circle, 90 degree turn out of a road etc. Do you actually think im just driving around in cirlces on full lock or somethink? Thanks for the lecture on steering but any regards towards the noise at the axle would of been more appreciated.

:p see last line of post

No mate, In High.

I didn't ask which ratio set you were in, I asked if you were in Centre Diff lock - the fact that you didn't understand that you can be in high ratio AND diff lock makes me wonder even more.

With your Hi-Lo selector, can you move it to the left? Or can you only move it to the right?

Dave

Sorry, no not in difflock, small gear stick to the right and and down.

rear diff input pinion bearing, check for any play in that, mine was doing exactly the same thing and it turned out the outer input bearing was shagged, easy enough to change yourself but just a bit labour intensive as the diff has to come out and then be stripped down(taking note of how many turns everything needs to come off) replace with timkin bearings and you should not need to reset the packing shims and then put it all back together again stick back in the housing half shafts back in and refill with stinky ep and away you go. simples really

Thanks for that mate. ill be sure to check that when I get round to pulling it all apart, if it was one of the pinion bearings as you said i may try find a cheap replacement diff in decent as condition as i can find and put that in.

unless your ring and pinion gear are right fooked up All you need is the inner and outer bearing and races and new seal, Putting a used diff onto a different pinion gear can be a big problem. Replacements are sold as a set ring and pinion together

Sorry mate u'll have to bear with me dont know a great deal regarding diffs barring the basics, dont no if what ive put above has made sence, i was thinking if the pinnion bearings were ####*ed then rather than strip it down it would be easier for me to just buy a replacement diff and put that in, connect the prop back onto the flange of the new diff obviously put half shafts n everythink else back together and b done?
