What’s the difference between all the various Discovery spec’s? I’m talking Discovery 1’s here, facelift models – so around 94/95 onwards. Is there a website with each model spec listed somewhere?

As far as I am aware it goes S, GS, XS, ES but I’ve also seen ES Premium, 50th Anniversary and a few others.

Also, I have noticed on the top models they sometimes have front seats with separate headrests and sometimes the all-in-one seat with hand-holds on either side – what is the reason for this? Which is better/more comfortable?

Can only go from experience but..

My 3.9 ES is a UK spec one, has the seats with seperate head rest and is more comfortable than the type with grabrails.
Only "ES Premium" I've seen have been foreign market versions, such as the Japanese and American (also seen the yanks have up to 4.6 with their V8, we had 3.5 and 3.9).
The XS has half leather seats in grey, with the Land Rover logo fabric down the middle, nicest looking interior of any standard Disco. Door cards matched with the logo fabric.

50th anniverary had a strange green paint with a blueish hue/tint to it if I remember correctly, and different alloys.

Almost forgot, Japanese market cars have an amplifier for the speakers as well as the one in the rear door, we just got the one in the rear door for the subs.
 
It's the later ES 97 98MY that have the seperate headrest.

ES Premium, the only difference is the stainless tread plates at the doors, a contrasting colour stitching on the leather seats, paint colours and the badges and they were available in the UK.

XS, has the decal along the sides and was the only one at the time to have 'Boost' wheels half leather with Land Rover printed on the fabric.

GS, just had a big option list so it could nearly be an ES if all the options were taken up.

S, just basic a "work horse" but still with a few options.

Then there were a few limited additions made.

I believe the 'Parker Guide' on the www has more details on D1 specs.

For those who have driven the 300 Tdi, how is it as a manual? I was after an auto, but have found a car perfect in every other way but with a manual gearbox. Still a good choice?
 
My dad has a 300TDi auto, I have a 300TDi manual, they're both nice to drive, both really good off road. If anything the auto is more relaxing on the road, and off road has an advantage in the sense that you don't have to threaten your progress to change up a gear when wading or tackling an incline.

Having said that, if you're the type of person that feels more involved in the process of driving with a manual (which I am) then that's the winner, although I still like driving the auto from time to time.

Horses for courses really. Unless you really can't be arsed with changing gear you won;t be disappointed by the manual, they're probably both as good as each other at the end of the day.
 
go on to parkers guide put in the make n model it comes up with a list think you gou to technical data n it lists all the lodels with what they should have standard and what can be bought

The rust doesn't matter. It's useless.

The percentage of remaining good quality chassis/sill/inner wing/boot floor/rear x member is what's important :D

Thanks Matt! In general I do prefer auto's on bigger cars, they just seem to suit - manuals on sportier things make sense, but on large cars which don't rae around everywhere the more relaxed auto would be my preference I guess.
