Since I got my TD4 Freelander, I've found myself doing a lot more DIY repairs than I would have done otherwise. My previous car hardly ever went wrong.

Compared to the Freelander TD4, is the disco 1 300tdi much easier to work with for a novice DIY mechanic?

That depends on what jobs you are looking at doing.Give a list and some will be FL,some will be D1.

Generally speaking I would say yes. As a rule of thumb the older the landy the less "difficult" jobs there will be on it. The disco has better access to most components but if you really want easy get yourself an old series landy. Half inch spanner and a big hammer and off you go.

For what it`s worth, I`ve recently sold my P38, after 5years, and chosen a 300tdi rather than a TD5 because I want ease of diy maintenance. A 300tdi will be older and a little less economical on fuel than a TD, but could well be cheaper over a long period of ownership. Not a costed out argument, as it does depend on getting a god`un to start with.

I owned a TD4 and now a 300Tdi Disco and I would say the Disco is easier to work on, one reason being there is a lot of room to get at things.

But expect at least twice as many jobs to do on the TDi as its a lot older, theres always something that needs doing

Old cars, regular cheap maintenance, not always easy bit rarely complicated.

New cars, irregular maintenance less often, usually expensive sometimes re-mortgage expensive, usually difficult to access and often complicated/not DIY suitable.

I work in the car trade and new age cars **** me off, old stuff makes me smile cos it's so easy to fault find and repair.

Do it :)

In a word yes.
There is plenty of room to do the jobs and I would say all can be done by a compitent DIY mechanic.
No really complicated electrics to go wrong.
And will run on cheap veg oil without too much trouble.
