Hi I have a 1995 300TDi commercial, I have been having differculty changing into 4th for the past 100 miles. Im not sure what gearbox model it is, but is this a easy job to fix?

Many thanks Callum

One of the many reasons for this could be the gearbox bias plate - if it is it's an easy and cheap fix.

Just to check, when the gear lever is in neutral, where does it sit? Between 1st and 2nd, or between 3rd and 4th?

Between 3rd and 4th :)

Ok well it could still be the bias plate that needs adjusting slightly, or it might be something deeper in the 'box.

To adjust the bias plate, take out the centre console/insulation/rubber membrane until you can see the top of the gearbox.

Remove the alloy cover that the gear lever goes into and then you'll see the bias plate and it's two springs. It is held in place by 4x 10mm bolts, slacken these a bit so you can move the bias plate until you get a smooth selection of 4th. By the sound of it you will need to move it to the right as far as it will go. Then re-tighten the securing bolts and road test. Assuming it has fixed the problem, put everything back together.

r380 gearbox ,check oil for cotamination as can be mainshaft front brg wearing, putting input shaft and mainshaft slightly out of line meaning synchro hub wont slide across, or worn baulk ring ,changing to mtf oil might help

The `official' gearbox oil renewal period for the R380 is 24,000 miles or 2 years (which ever comes first). However, its always better to renew more frequently. - You'll need a 22mm ring spanner for the drain plug and a Torx 55 bit for the filler plug.

I think you'll find that it's a 32mm for the sump plug.

Also, the official gearbox oil renewal period is 12,000 miles/1 year.

I have the same problem on my Disco 1 - it does sit between 3/4 and problem when going down from 5 to 4. I am not expert on mechanics - went to have a look as above but it is not so clear as on a Disco. Is there a trick to get to this plate on the disco?
