I have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery HSE TD5 automatic. I have been told that there is a limit to the amount of power or torque that the engine can put out before the automatic gearbox sensing this freaks out and puts the vehicle into limp home mode. Anyone know what this level is?

What sort of performance engine mods have people done to a vehicle such as this in order to walk as close to that line without crossing it?

there no torque sensors in box but if you drive harshly life will be shorter, the clutch packs inside and free wheel or one way clutches will transmit a lot of power but its the suddeness that you get with diesel rather than petrol which shortens life

It isn't usually power hikes that cause the gearbox to go into limp home mode, it's electrical issues such as a faulty gear selector switch, poor connections between the switch and the 'box ECU - stuff like that.

The same box is used in the 4.6 v8 engined Disco's so you'll have to go some to 'bash the box' with power alone.

One difference worth considering though is the Torque Converter. The std TD5 affair is a bit lightweight and has a relatively high stall speed. The v8 ones are bigger with greater oil capacity and lower stall speeds.

Ashcrofts do a modified V8 one with a heavy duty connecting plate setup for TD5 and owners who have done the mod report excellent results. Less slip, more cohesion between engine and box, therefore better response and mpg.

I will be doing this mod as part of my preparations for overall performance improvements.
