Hi there

If anyone has any idea re the below your input will be most welcome. Since shortly after buying my Disco TD5 auto last year (absolutely love it!) I've had the almost inevitable XYZ prob. As I had a few other priorities to pay for after buying I deferred getting it sorted and what a mistake that was as the switch then jumped up to £300+

Although the XYZ thing is more of an annoyance than a hinderance (clears with a restart but 3 point turns are a pain) I now want to have the auto box fluid and filter changed - will I need to sort the XYZ issue so that the gears can all be selected for the refilling routine i.e. to stop the box locking into 3rd?

Also would an XYZ switch from North America be compatible with my TD5 Disco as they only sold V8s there (which had a strengthened version of the ZF box but with same ratios i think)?

I read on searches about the battery issue and possible chafed wires but have no reason to suspect either as it can occur at the end of a long journey and its not intermittent or spontaneous - it specifically happens when going into R from P or D and occasionally when going from any forward gear straight to P. This makes me think it either needs adjusting (probably a long shot) cleaning/soaking with contact cleaner/WD40 (I would have to ask a garage if they would try as I cant get near the beggar due to lack of ramp/pit/tools) or sadly, and most likely, replacing for 300-odd quid :(

Would a diagnostic be able to tell the difference between a faulty switch and one that needs adjusting?

Any advice much appreciated

Many thanks, AJ

Sorry to resurrect this one guys, but defcrazy are you sure you can't adjust these? I am looking to try "adjusting mine" because the gear indication is fine except for Drive - it loses the "D" indication once the engine warms up, but I can get it back by gently pressing the lever back slightly - I have to do this to make it lock down once I'm at speed.

I figured loosening some screws, rotating it the right way a little bit, and tightening them back up would do the job no probs. Wot do you reckon?

Did this adjustment get anywhere?
I have changed the battery and I am just about to go and get the fluid changed.
Mine seems to always do it on first start but then I can be a rough as hell quick changing during a 3 point turn nothing. Tickle the lever into R to get closer to a kerb and bang flashy, flashy M + S!!!
Has nobody come up with a work around?

As James has said they are defo adjustable. Get hold of a copy of RAVE 2 (Discovery II) for the procedure.

Also do a search on here for "XYZ switch clean" or refurb - someone on here reported repairing theirs.

All...........I've seen a thread somewhere, where it gives you photo'd instructions of how to take this switch apart and clean it up so it works again. I shall try and find it for you........It'll save you £'s to treat your Disco to a new toy :)

I would dismantle an old one but if I take the one I have off and it goes pop I am farked and have to spend £££.
There must be a tech wizard who can come up with a £50 fix all...

Can this be bottomed out and a new sticky made?
I have found the switch part number listed as Land Rover part number UHB100190 or from an American website Bosch part number 501320452 but this could be for the 4.6 V8 auto box but it looks identical and it is $125 which is a lot cheaper than the rest. The same switch is fitted to the 4.6 P38 Thor Range Rover if anyone knows about this.

I thought I'd sourced a replacement from the States but found they'd only ship it within the USA!!!!!! I sourced a new (genuine) one from UK but still occaisionally get the same problem:(
So I've got the old one still in the garage but don't know how to test to see if it's OK. Perhaps I will drill out the rivets and have a look inside?
Unless someone wants to give it a go on their gearbox and reward me with beer tokens if it works?

They are adjustable but there is a special tool that locates them in a certain position, the slots are so this position can be achieved, so don't move it from the set position. If your gear lever has to be pressed forward or back to go into gear adjust the selector cable not the XYZ switch. most of the problems with the switch were caused by water dripping from the A/C drain onto the switch so when you fit a new switch extend the drain tube past the XYZ switch, also check the grey connector I have seen corrosion in these.

Right this isn't funny, I had the M+S every single time, now we have good weather I can barely get it to do it!!!
I have now opened a used switch, cleaned it with contact cleaner and flushed it with WD40.
So now it is don't fix it unless it is broken (again) or drive on and forget it till it is pi$$ing down and nasty to lie under in the rain and try a repair!!!
I don't know!!!
