Hi All

I'm getting grinding in fifth gear on my manual 04 Landmark D2 between 50 - 70. At first I thought "wheel balance" but I've had it done several times and it makes no difference. I also thought wheel bearing but it doesn't occur in fourth or when coasting. I can ease it by subtle balancing of the throttle but when going up hill and applying gas and the noise increases again likewise down hill with or without gas. It's been going on for two years.

I was advised wrongly by a local gearbox specialist that it was the transfer box and they rebuilt it, they said the two main bearings were destoyed, but still the same so now thinking "a bearing on fifth gear?" don't really want to take it back to the people who did the TB as it was an expensive diagnosis and I only have their word it there was a TB problem as it was just the same when I got it back over a £1000 worse off. The Transfer box was an Ashroft Recon Unit fitted when I had a diff lock added in 2006, as late 04's didn't have the access plate for the lever the box had to be swapped.

Has anyone had this problem or can point me in the right direction?

I have towed a reasonably heavy trailers 9at about 1.5 tonnes) for long distances if this makes a difference one I later found had binding brakes.

thers 2 brgs at back of rear housing probably lower layshaft one worn they are often pitted, but only shows in fifth as 1,2,3 are supported by brg in plate in front of 5th t/box brgs would have been noisy in all gears

Thanks for your input guys

Fly Wheel and Clutch were replaced 5000 mls ago with genuine LR parts

James's idea sounds the most likely.

I guess it's a gearbox out repair so may be cheaper to get exchange unit drop out the old and drop in the new?

if everything else is fine with boc gear changes etc its not a bad job for competent person to do,as only requires rear extension housing removing and brg swapping about £15 for genuine brg, will be oibviously worn its quite a common fault

James

Thanks you're star............It's god to have people who have such good knowledge on the forum............keep up the good work and I'll let you know how it goes.

Well after a gear box rebuild and props checked and UJ's replaced and all in all around £2000 later I still have the vibration just the same as before..................I'm totally lost as what the cause is.

I'd call it more of a vibration now than grinding and it occurs between 55-70mph with power on and on overrun. Goes away if I drop the clutch and coast.

LR specialist says doughnut and props are fine. Transfer box is just over 12 months old and vibration was happenning before it was fitted anyway

i presume symptoms are slightly different as you had grinding before and vibration now, through the steering wheel or car ?is prop on front correctly aligned alot of mechanics are sure of this
