Hello all,

I've had alot of problems with my TD5 disco 2 and I recently had a severe knocking sound coming from it while driving.

I drained the gearbox oil and checked to make sure the filter was intact. Then refilled it with new dexron IID.

I then noticed the propshaft UJ's were totally knackered, so took off the prop shaft and changed them and put it back on with new bolt and nuts.
---------------
Now when driving I get a chattering sound (like a ratchet) when the cars moving. If I gun it and then slow down it stops for about a minute.

If i'm driving and I put it into 'N' (automatic). The chattering stops and then starts again if I put it back into Drive.

It doesn't happen at idle.

----------
I've just done with gearbox fluid refill method again using the method from discovery2.co.uk and the chattering is still there.

What are your thoughts? Im thinking its either the propshaft is toast or I just need to keep trying topping up the ATF fluid?

Thanks in advance guys!

It sounds to me like the problem remains with the propshaft/s. I assume you filled the new u/j's with grease after fitting them. Which ones did you replace? There are 4 in total.

I replaced the 3 on the front propshaft.

I went to top up the gearbox ATF fluid and its still very full and dripped out as soon as I took the plug out.

I did however find a loose bolt on the flange and tightened it a bit with the tool I had at the time. It made no difference but may be an issue with torque. Tomorrow, I will remove the propshaft, grease it again just to be sure and refit it with a good tighten of the bolts. Hopefully that'll fix the issue!

Thanks for the help Biglad :)

I assume you checked the oil level whilst the engine was running and after you had selected each gear position in turn to fill up the gearbox workings?

Im a newbie so treat with caution, but mine (TD5) was knocking more in reverse and corners.

Replaced the bushes and bearing in the Whats (is this how you spell it) joint prob solved.

can you expand on the correct spelling then for future ref!

To be perfectly honest, no, I can't.

I had assumed that you had put a little sort of "note to self - check spelling" in there and had forgotten to remove it. I couldn't see anything wrong with your spelling etc., and since I have never heard of a "Watts Linkage, or Watts Joint" I was well off the mark anyway.

I had included a couple of smileys to mean I was teasing ya, but they didn't come through for some reason, I think I mis-spelled D!

:D:D:D

mis spelling a smiley.....bad day!! I did undestand you was pulling my leg.Alls well that ends well.

As for the WATTS Link that would be £170 of bushes and bearings!

So, took prop shaft off and re greased. Then refitted with new prop bolts and nuts and theres no change at all in the sound.

Anyone else have any solutions or dont think this is the prop shaft? before I buy a new one? Id be gutted if it wasn't the prop shaft after the hefty price tag they have.

Anyone know where the cheapest place to get one would be?

Also when I put it in Neutral the sound stops, does the prop shaft stop spinning when in neutral?

Thanks guys!

It still sounds prop-related to me, have you checked the rubber propshaft u/j and rubber doughnut? Have you greased the rear sliding shaft on the prop and the u/j? Incidentally, you don't need to remove the propshafts to grease them, just lift a wheel so you can rotate the propshaft to access the grease nipples.

I've just jacked up the car and checked the doughnut, that looks good.

I also greased the sliding shaft and checked the rear propshaft UJ.

The only possible thing I can think of is if its imbalanced, as the old UJs never had grease nipples and the new ones do, also I marked the propshaft when I took it off, but after all the messing about I couldn't see them and had to assemble it at a guess.

Is it possible to assemble the prop shaft with the threaded bit not in the hooke joint bearing? Because if you can then this could also be it. I did however check the movement and it moved fine when off the car.

Thanks for the help,
John

Well, I ordered a new propshaft from DLS spares on ebay (my favourite seller by far) and fitted it.

Due to the BFPO mail system it would of taken a month to get it and so I had to put it in my hold luggage on the plane, as well as a teng socket set and motorbike chain lol.

The car is great now, no ticking knocking or anything.

---------

However I bought this:
LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 TD5 MANUAL FRONT PROPSHAFT on eBay (end time 08-Jun-11 10:38:52 BST)

Its for a manual, but my disco 2 is a Automatic.

I heard that the manual propshafts fit the early disco 2's up to around 2000. Mine is a early 1999.

The front flange can only be secured by 2 of the bolts, due to a differant stud pattern, but the length and hooke joint is the same, I get no vibration either.

Do you think its worth taking the old flange off the other propshaft and swapping them? Or just leave it as long as it's checked every so often?

Many thanks! My cars driving again!
