Interesting one this... My D1 300Tdi was idling on the drive, suddenly and for no apparent reason it decided to chuck the accessory belt off!

A couple of the outer 'ribs' actually shredded off, luckily I managed to turn the engine off before further damage was done. The belt has covered around 1500 miles at the most, it is a britpart item.

Upon inspecting the pulleys, I did notice that the water pump pulley (top right of engine) has a very slight dent on the inner edge, could this over time have weakened the belt and caused it to jump...or is there another more common explanation?

Grab hold of the power steering pump pully and see if you can pull it in and out, my bet is the pump has had it.

Mine did eaxctly the same twice before i twigged what it was.

Its not too bad a job to replace it, I fitted a britpart one and its now done 12,000 miles and shows no sign of wear and it was only £56

Plot thickens...no play in the power steering pump pulley whatsoever. The only pulley with a marginal amount of play is the belt tensioning one but it's really next to nothing in honesty and the bearing itself spins freely.

Ok...got this sorted out. The 'replacement' water pump I fitted (from a local LR independent) located the pulley a few mm closer to the engine block than it should have done...I've used some thick washers between the pulley and pulley mounting to bring it back out to the correct position and this appears to have done the trick.
