Default Check Engine Light

Can anybody help me with the Check Engine light? When I turn the key the Check Engine light comes on but then goes off once the engine starts. Is this a bulb check or do I have a problem? Also can anybody recommend a tool for reading fault codes? My Disco is a ’96 300 TDI

I have seen a few references to something called TestBook which I assume is a diagnostics program. Is this available to us or is this a main dealer tool?

testbook is a main dealer tool, unless you got a few grand to spare.

You wont read fault codes on a normal ODBii reader, you'll need a Land Rover one and they come at a price.
