Cheap Glowplugs any good?

Time for new glowplugs for my 300tdi. Anyone tried those sets you can get for around £12?
Pukka LR plugs are £50 a set and I'm strapped for dosh right now.....

Tis the season for glowplugs obviously...

I have used the paddocks special offer ones-only needed 2 immediately-other 2 just gone in-the original 2 are a year old and just had em out and checked all are good-so,so far no probs

I got some from Paddocks last week about £2.50 + vat each work ok on special at the moment.

As above i used to have cheap ones in my 200 after i found none were working!

tdis arent super reliant on good heater plugs anyway

Ordered some for mine also, as mine aren't working at all, still starting at -5 thou, having said that mine aren't wired up to a live feed either and can't find it anywhere

I just put a new set in mine, they were just over 40 quid for the set. I did think about trying some cheaper ones but was worried about the tips falling of etc as I do think you get what you pay for... that said people seem to be OK with them

just changed my cheap ones for a set of ngk ones,the cheap ones were put in last year and only one was still working.the ngk ones were £7.00 a pop but hopefully they will last a few years,maybe not need to get everybody up tommorow with the sound of it crancking over for 10 mins...

are the delphi ones any good is i am going to paddocks next week when i get paid and the only ones they do are the cheepo ones £2.00 odd each no make shown or the delphi ones at £25 a set + vat of course has anyone used them on theres.

i have had a cheap set £3 quid each in mine for 5 years no probs so far (they will probably melt down and take my turbo out now i have said that)

I recently fitted a set of Beru ones, origional equipment I think.

I did buy the cheap ones first but the first one I tried to fit broke. The tiny nut was old and rusty and new ones are not provided, and as I got a small ratchet on to to put the power lead on the top just spun.

I took them all back to the shop and paid the difference for the Beru ones.

The cheap ones were Britpart by the way.

Think my 300tdi has finally succomed to the cold snap, took a good 6-8 cranks to start this morning after 3 blasts of the glow plugs, it was -14 mind you.
I put a set of cheapo ones in 18 months ago, do you guys think it will be worth replacing em?

Take em out and test em-should glow red hot at end within 5 secs-if they do this they are fine.
At minus 14 diesel could be waxing (rated to minus 15) get 5%-!0% unleaded in the tank and mix it up good (safe to 30%)

Will test em tomorro, is it just a case of undoing then and holding em with pliers and gettin someone to turn the ignition key?
Never thought of waxing up, also never thought of adding unleaded, might add a couple of litres

Mike,I take them out and test them across a good battery with jump leads-don't get your hand near the hot tip
Don't know what temperatures are going to do,but if keep dropping you are definitely going to need some unleaded in there-From memory,I think it is SAAB who suggest adding up to 30% in their owners manuals for Scandinavian winters

Think I may just change em save all the farting about, has any one else added an unleaded?

Adding petrol to ya diesel is a old trick and has been used for years in both agriculture and with commercials (trucks etc..) so is safe enough to do.

I can remember my old man doing it when I was a kid in his truck and have done it myself since I have been running Land Rovers when the weather turns cold. Just don't overdo it.

Ok cool, wil drop a couple of litres in tomorrow and see how it goes. Thanks guys
