Hi all,

After spending months welding up my disco, I have managed to break a front spring after being back on the road for only 2 days. I'd love to say I did it laning but it was on a speed bump

Anyway, New springs ordered from paddocks but can anyone tell me if I can change them without removing the shock turrets?

Cheers

No, as you have to remove the shock absorber.

Bummer, I Was hoping I could just slip the spring off the bottom of the shock if I levered the axle down far enough. I better get the turret rings ordered as knowing my luck the bolts will shear when I try to take them off. :(

Cheers

yes you can as long as you can undo top nut and bottom nut ivery rarely take turret off when doing shocks and springs use your vehicle jack betwwen axle and chassis to help

This is what the Disco workshop manual says, so two ways to do the job then.

Remove
1. Remove front shock absorber. See Front
Shock Absorber
CAUTION: Avoid over stretching brake
hoses. If necessary loosen hose connector
locknuts to allow hoses to follow axle.
2. Lower axle sufficient to free road spring.
3. Withdraw road spring.
4. Withdraw shock absorber bracket securing ring.
Refit
5. Fit shock absorber bracket retaining ring. Retain
in position with a nut.
6. Reverse 2 and 3.
7. Remove nut retaining securing ring.
8. Fit front shock absorber.

Front shock absorber.
Remove
1. Loosen road wheel retaining nuts.
2. Support chassis on stands and remove road
wheel.
3. Support axle weight with jack.
4. Remove shock absorber lower fixing and
withdraw cupwasher, rubber bush and seating
washer.
5. Remove four shock absorber bracket fixings.
6. Withdraw shock absorber and bracket complete.

you can change springs without touching the turret.....

Might depend on shocks though, normal oil shocks are ok, gas shocks wouldnt be good to push up.
jack the body/chassis up. jack the axle up to release the tension on the shock, undo bottom shock mount and push it up in to turret, lower axle or raise body enough to get spring out....watch the brake hose...dont strech it!!

I changed both front springs without removing the shock. I pushed the base of the shock upwards into it's housing and used spring compressors to compress the springs. No need to remove the shock :)

Ah, Cheers all.

I suspected I could get away without removing them, nice to have confirmation though. Spanners out again tomorrow so I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers
