after finding water in the passenger footwell, i want to take the front carpet out and give the floor a good checking over. is there anything i need to know about taking the front console out. is there any hidden screws or does the handbrake need to be released, ive done a quick search but could not find anything

thanks

On a TD5 - You would also need to take off the pin and circlip to release the handbrake cable (it would need to be at an angle to get the centre counsol out) as well as taking the tops of the gear stick, handbrake and high/low/difflock leaver and gently prising out the gaters. You will also need to release the two electric wires that connect to the cigarette lighter. There are also a couple of screws holding air ducts to the rear that could easily be removed (one small screw each). Very easy to do.

Hope this helps.

Two screws in cubby box floor, two screws at front end of console below rubber mat, one screw beside handbrake below switch panel.
Remove switch panel for windows, unplug connectors,
disconnect handbrake cable from handbrake by removing pin, put handbrake lever in vertical position (no more) and lift up console and remove.

that's it, except mine has 4 screws in the cuby box floor

today, i thought i would see where the water was coming from that is soaking the passenger footwell. after pouring water across the left hand top of the windscreen, i found water coming down cables in the passenger kick panel. so is the trim easy to take off that runs down the side of the windscreen so i can put sealent around the cables that go into the footwell. need to get it done soon before the dreaded rot takes hold

Pain in the hole getting the carpet out, I took out the centre console then still had a job trying to shift the carpet so I cut it down the middle, reckon when I put it back in the console will cover up the cut.

You might want to to unscrew and remove the gear knob/ diff lock knob as well just to make it less hassle.

if you want to do it properly, remove the wing out...

on the pic below you can see the rust just next to the wheel arch, and near the pillar where the door is..

thats where the water gets in...

I sealed both sides on my old disco...

probably easier than shifting the carpet around

I'm waiting on some slightly better weather before I get the wings off, the last time I started the job with the weather forecast for a clear day and we ended up with snowmageddon. Had the carpets out since before then though so they don't get any more waterlogged and knackered.
