This morning my girl went silly arses going round a roundabout and now will only go into 1st gear and 3rd gear, all the rest will not go. There were no terrible noises or cracks heard (but music was a wee bit loud so not sure)
I'm no specialist mechanic but am pressuming this is the Gearbox knackered up. What i need advice on is :
a) will i need a whole new gear box or could it be something more acceptable on my pocket to sort out; and
b) if it is the case of my purse (and myself) crying and replacing the entire thing does anyone know of a good place i can get a descent priced one for an L reg 200tdi Discovery
Thankyou in advance

when you say 1st and 3rd does stick jam trying others,or loose, as if you remove consol and gaiter ,gear stick etc you will see top of gear box remove tin cover and check bias spring plate not broken, and if everything okay you can remove the gearbox top and check yoke on selector

Right in 1st and 3rd its working brilliantly, as normal no noise whatsoever. It is sitting in Neutral as dandy as before but will not budge into Reverse, 2nd, 4th or 5th. Prior to this happening it has given no sign of playing up no noises or crunching etc.
Someone has suggested maybe the plate has broken and jammed it up. If this is possibly the case how do i check and how do u take the middle panel apart any links to pics or vid would be brill as i have to do this myself. As any tips would be brill.

yes i did ,remove both gear stick gaiters they snap in /out ,remove switch panel then front back screws on consol and remove pin from handbrake lever then drill out pop rivets on tunnel gaiter

I hope mine is screws, i dont fancy fafing about getting all that lot off to be faced with drilling out rivets, i'll just end up hitting it with an hammer otherwise (unfortunate side effect of PMT and something not going to plan LoL)

yeh, once you get the gaiters off, the switch panel and the centre console out of the way, you'll get to a metal plate.. this is usually riveted, unless someone has been to it before and fitted screws...

once all is out, you'll be faced with this:

from what you describe its very likely that its only the plate..

Taken it all off tonight, killed 3 metal drill bits and quite a few rivets later but got there. It has thankfully turned out to be the plate broken. Theres a little square bit broke off that doesnt really seem to do anything but must be on there for a reason so will replace it tomorrow. All springs seem fine and with the loose metal bit gone drives fine again.

Has anyone had to replace one of these before and is it just a case of unscrewing the 2large screws, slide the top bit off, clean up the gasket and unscrew the nuts to the plate?? Please let me know if I'm under a false sense of security because it looks quite straight forward.

that plate which the upright part has broken off holds springs in rigth place so that gear stick is held in 3rd 4th gear alignment so that with full stick and knob on if you push it to one side and let go it returns to 3rd-4th,it has slotted holes to achieve the adjustment necessary, watch springs else you will get black finger nail ,when refitting start bolt through spring dont fulll tighten and ben spring around stick and over bias plate have stick as far forward as poss

The 2 centralising springs are still there and working fine, a inch size square piece of metal was broken off between the 2 prongs, any ideas what this does because if i dont need to replace the plate and mess with springs (dont fancy black nail without the nail varnish) i won't. Mine is a LT77 i believe so it naturally sits to the left just under first gear, it always has anyways as long as I've had it (or has it been broken for as long as I've had it LoL).

Can I say thanks you lot for the help saved me a fortune instead of instantly thing 'OMG new gear box'

The plates are only £5 so you may as well replace now you've done all the stripping out.

As you undo the 4 bolts the springs can try to launch and get your eye, so be careful! Then stick it all back together. easy job.

thats the bias part it keep springs in right place to hold lever in 3rd 4th alignment if it dosent sit there then 3rd 4th will be hard to get ,it needs new plate and setting properly ,also gear stick will have wear marks where springs have rubbed if there deep weld and grind smooth or change stick, this also makes poor gear change
