I'm going to look at a Discovery at the weekend with a view to hopefully buying it. However as a Land Rover noob I don't know what I should be looking out for. It's a 96 300Tdi so I'm not so much worried about dings and (some) rust but more about the things that would cost a packet to fix or cause a major MOT failure. Smaller mechanical problems aren't so much of a worry (I would class myself as a competent home mechanic) and could even be used to lower the price.

So I throw myself on your mercy Discovery experts - what should I be looking out for?

Thanks in advance.

look for rust its the main problem with old discoverys, sills under the doors, rear wheel arches, door piullars and boot floor are the most common places, crawl underneith and give then a good poking with a screwdriver or similar, pick up rear carpet in the boot and check that, and generally everything else youd check with an old car, not smoking too much or any whining, loud tapping ect
