Brake Lights & ABS Problems

2 days ago my ABS light came on about 1 mile from home. I parked the car (1996 300 TDi Auto) on the drive and left it overnight. Yesterday morning I couldn't get it out of Park to reverse off the drive. Searching this forum I found that it could be caused by a faulty brake light switch. I checked the brakes and sure enough no lights. I replaced the brake light switch last night and that sorted out the problem getting the auto box out of park.
Stupidly I thought that had resolved all of the issues but the ABS light is still on and during my journey to work this morning an irate driver let me know that I still have no brake lights.
Does anyone have an idea to what can be causing these issues as the new brake switch has only cured part of the problem.

Thanks Brainboy, will do. Would a duff ABS fuse stop the brake lights working as well or is that a serperate problem?

not sure on the wiring for you model but it could well be the same fuse, have a quick scan over both fuse boxes and check there are no blown ones.

I've just been outside to check the fuses. It's snowing so I only did a quick run over all of the fuses with a multimeter but couldn't find anything that was blown. I found the ABS fuse in the panel under the steering wheel but that was fine.
I'll have to keep digging.

have you set the brake pedal switch travel? the tip of the switch can be pulled in and out, so may not be in the right position

Hi Mark you were spot on. When I got home tonight I double checked all of the fuses again and read your post about the switch. I removed the switch and pulled the plastic collar (it surrounds the plunger) right out. It is on a ratchet and sets itself the first time you put your foot on the brake. Hey presto, I now have brake lights again.
All I need to do now is sort out the ABS light. I think I will be able to sort that out by resetting the ABS error codes. There's plenty of info on this site on how to do that so I'll read up on it then tackle it on the weekend.
